Filling in Bio

When I reply to a question it is based on a fair bit of experience on a range of boats, most of which I did not own.

The most skilled and experienced sailors I know do not own their own boats but are employed by others.

When someone asks a question, why should I assume it relates to the boat in their bio? Many of us frequently sail OPBs both profesionally and for fun. If a question does not give sufficient information to allow it to be answered, then looking in the bio is unlikely to help. I can't think when I last looked at anyone's bio, I take each post on its own merits.

I fear this smacks slightly of a willy waving contest in which I prefer not to participate.

PS. My boat details are now fully up to date.

Don't know what all the fuss is about. My bio is complete and includes contact details

Mind you, there was a message on my answerphone tonight from HMCR - wonder how they got hold of me?

I don't really care whether there is a bio or not. You soon find out which posters are worth reading and which ones should be avoided.

Filling in a bio is about as relevant as someone telling you he's a comedian. Doesn't mean a thing unless he says something amusing.

We had a bit of a psycho on here a few years ago who was given to making threats of violence against those who disagreed with him. He just happened to live within a few miles of me. 99.99% of forumites are OK but there are the odd nutters you wouldn't want to be able to identify you.

Let's not forget that whilst 99.99% of forumites are OK, the whole user base of the www , ie several billion, can read posts and hence bio's without being registered.

I tried Google as mentioned by another .... my name in the search box .... Blimey ! It was like reading a calendar of events over history of my life !
Yahoo took me straight into YBW Bio ... no messing - no log-on even !

Sorry - but considering lifes an open book on internet whether bio completed or not ... ???????????????

I think you're absolutely spot on - why sit on here and identify your boat, it's name, location, give details of the frequency at which you visit it, discuss all the expensive gear that you have on board and even (in some cases) your boat security measures (or lack of)???

Ive even see it go as far as some users broadcasting the fact that they dont lock the boat because they think the break-in damage would cost more to repair than the replacement value of stolen items???

But not only that. if you're away for the weekend sailing your boat - chances are you're not at home...if your biog shows your name and home town, a quick call to directory enquiries gives the address of the empty house

Get real guys, there can be few better places for a professional crim to skim than on this forum = plenty wealthy boat owners / away from home lots / expensive gear etc etc.

Don't do it!

You away this weekend then?

Only asking.

(the [--word removed--] who knick stuff around here are locals who are on the lake or the shore a lot of the time and never stray near a computer.)

Phil,

You just get yerself back out on that lake looking for that lovely little Shetland and whilst yer away I'll be in through the back window and nick yer Wabberthwaites!

Anway, talking of biogs - what's a "resoration" project?

Is it a cross between restoration and resurrection, in which case did you bite off more than you can chew? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
