Filler cap seals again

Some discussion recently about seals on our fuel filler caps.
I thought I had better inspect the condition of mine.
Err..? I haven’t got any!! I took a photo and as you may see it has a machined angle which just seems to seal metal to metal. Below the angle is a groove which could take a square section rubber or even an O ring type but there would be nothing to compress such a seal against.
There are 3 identical fittings on the boat ( 2 fuel and 1 water) non of them show a sign of ever having a rubber seal on them.
Is this a standard sort of fitting?

I'm going to scurry out to look at mine. Seems to me that any metal to metal seal will let water pass. BTW, the way you and others attach photos means I can't view them on my mobile. (That sounds a bit stern, no offence intended).
 
As pvb says, there should be an O-ring on there, quite a thick section one, so it sticks out of the square groove a little, and the top chamfered bit compresses it. Not a perfect engineering solution, but it seems to work. I regularly get water pooling round my diesel filler, but don't get water in the tank (I regularly drain a couple of litres of fuel from the bottom to check for water, dirt and diesel bug, and it has always been clean since I took the tank out and cleaned it 5 yrs ago).
 
I don't know how others do it. Some work some don't.when I see 'attached thumbnails' I know I won't be able to see them on my android phone. I think VicS is an expert perhaps he will comment.
