Came across this american super gin-palace on my travels
called FIGHTING IRISH... a tad intimidating dont you think

It turned up at Jolly Harbour .. during the afternoon.. and.... it was St Patricks day
...going to be lively in the bars tonight..

Anyway,... I would like to know does this name mean anything in particular, has it got historical references ..?

is it political history.. some irish millionaire x boxer... irish mafia..
just intregued to know....

I did a quick bit of googling, and about the only thing I didn't find was WWII !

The Fighting Irish was a brigade of note in the American Civil War, and the name seems to have kept on, including a heroic stand against huge odds in the Congo in 1960.

The Fighting Irish is the name of the University of Notre Dame american football team, which is apparantly mega-millions business; seems the boat, which is mentioned, is related to the football outfit, probably not the bloke who holds the sponge.

At the time I was in a bar talking to some loverly young Irish girls, and they had no knowledge
of what the name may mean.. they were not very happy with the name either

do not fear the ' Fighting Irish' of Notre Dame...

a very prominent national catholic university in the USA is Notre Dame. its football team is named the Fighting Irish . the school has a huge and quite loyal following and it is not unusual to see Fighting Irish named yachts, motorhomes, car license plates and the like. Those who follow the school immediately befriend all others who display the Fighting Irish name anywhere on their persons or possessions....the name is usually accompanied by a figure of a small green elf or two... the notre dame alumni are usually quite friendly and will offer you much food and drink and many a tall tall tale...especially if you can stand talking about american football.

I think if your looking for a reason as to how an American super yacht is called an Irish name, I think it would come down to the 4 million or so people that emigrated during the Great Potato famine, most of them went to the US and have kept a romantic view of the ole sod.

Ask any American on Paddies day and he will tell you he has Irish ancestors, they don't seem as ready to talk about their link to the English.
