I need to try and find a thermostat that opens earlier than 82c.(the normal for cars/bikes)It is car size, but goes on a 10.5 litre diesel and by the time it opens the heat exchanger struggles to bring it back down.Anyone know of such a beast?I think the raw water cooled engines use a larger size thermostat

Trick I've used in cars over the years is to drill a 1/4inch or smilar hole in the flange of the stat. This means their is a tad more flow and that A. Bleeds any trapped air out and B. seems to allow just water flow t cure th marginal conditions.

Has it got an oil cooler? I looked at a diesel that was having probs keeping at proper temp. After looking at all the usual cooling stuff I was getting nowhere fast. Then I spied the oil cooler. Whipped it off and found the tube stack blocked. Rodded it out with a length of coathanger and the engine run cooler. It was not cooling the oil enough and restricying the raw water flow at the same time.

I'm not saying thats whats wrong with yours, but as soon as engines run hot everyone blames the stat. Worth checking the raw water pump too. What engine is it.

Hi Barry
I,ve cleaned out the oil cooler, but thanks for the suggestion.I'm probably being a bit paranoid(normal in boat circles I guess)as I have'nt fitted the new head gaskets yet, only just received them as I had to get them made. The raw water pump is ok but it does have a lot of work to do as it goes through an air intercooler,engine/gearbox cooler, then the cooling water heat exchanger.I am thinking of doing away with the intercooler as the turbo only boosts from 2500 and the 30 year old 10.5 litre revs to 2800 which I wont go to (2300 max).I think it was only turboed on this boat in an effort to give it enough horsepower for short bursts and was always marginal.I'm just trying to do what I can so when its back together it works most of the time!
Regards Al.
