Not long ago I sold a few books dealing with ferro-cement boat building to someone on this forum. I have no record of who [whom?] it was but, if he will contact me, "he may learn something to his advantage"!
When we finished building our ferro-cement boat, I had a great idea for a consultancy project, combining a useful public service with a bit of an earner.
It was this. If you want to build a ferro boat, you can hire me for a small fee, and I will try to talk you out of it.
I think the company motto was , If you want to go for a drive in the country, you don´t start by trying to build a 1992 Ford Mondeo.
I don't want to build one, at some stage I will probably buy one...at the right price. I like the Samson clipper designs and also the boat CodStewart has (Herschoff??design).
I would like to sail on one before I purchase just to see what the motion is like compared to a GRP boat.
I haven´t sailed very much in plastic boats, so I can´t make a valid comparison, but the motion in Iris Mary, which is ten tons on 33ft LOA, seems very acceptable.
No slamming, no twitching, not a lot of sea coming over the bow, and almost completely quiet when below. Some of this may be due to the hull design rather than the weight.
On the other hand, she rolls badly downwind in a big sea, and is capable of causing serious damage when in harbour, which probably is due to the weight.
Hi Ya All;
I am a crazy Yank that likes building exparimental boats. I have rebuild a 1937 Lightening class sail boat and built a reproduction Viking 20 ft boat and a 24Ft two masted english bomb ketch---now I was thinking of doing a sailing barge only big---like 70FX14Ft
I like Bolger designs but have never built one of the flat bottom boats. I was thinking of doing a 10ft flat bottom in concrete and then connect a couple of chines off the concrete in wood so I could have some Iron and weight down below without having a big Keel.
I could not find any infomation on attaching wooden frames and skins to a poured floor below waterline. Does anyone have any information on below water wood attachments to concrete?
I would appreciate a pointer on how to make the attachment points.
