Fenders

What's all the fuss? As soon as we pass the Perch Rock, set the boss up with her Pimms on the sun lounger, switch on the autopilot, throttle to 30knts (bow wave will keep yachts at bay), stroll around sidedecks Cuban Rum in 1 hand raise fenders with the other..............simples! (If only I had the balls!!)

Why wait for Perch Rock? Thats 3 miles from the marina, there is a speed limit for ships, but I wouldn't expect it to apply to small boats. They have races off the old pier & reach quite high speeds when the river allows it.

No, but I'll be attempting to throw NBYCo's Violet onder PH bridge come Sunday if you fancy a laugh. I'll even try to remember to take the mast down.

We are on the Norfolk Broads and can assure that they are a sensible precaution against hire boat attack at any time.

Our fenders don't come up until Breydon Water if heading out of Yarmouth or through Mutford Lock for Lowestoft. There are not many brave enough to expose their Gel coat prior to the no hire boat signs.

Dear Motor Boaters

Could you enlighten a baffled sailing type about why so many motor boats have their fenders dangling out all the time? I've just spent a couple of days in Great Yarmouth and Oulton - for work - and noticed that every single modern motor boat I saw was festooned with fenders. A couple of very pretty classic motor boats, and all the sailing boats I saw, were fenderless.

I've even noticed it in pictures and avatars here - smart and very expensive looking boats with blue (always blue) bobbles all the way round, even when well out at sea.

Is it aesthetics? Lack of stowage space? I'm truly confused.

Yours

Confused.

Cos private boats seem to be outnumbered by hire boats on the Broads. When you have been side-swiped by a 40ft hire boat with 12 women enjoying a hen party on board you couldn't care less what anybody thinks of you...you deploy every fender you can lay your hands on and leave them there. Been there, seen it, done it!

I agree. On the Broads, the risk of a swipe from a hire boat is substantial. Same for us on the R Severn with steel narrowboats!!. Fenders stay down until out on open water.
