Fenders: One of the weird things...

If a long passage then I try to fit them into my cockpit locker, but usually one or two have to go elsewhere.

I try to avoid the anchor locker as I solo and if I need the anchor quickly I don't want to have to unload and move lots of stuff.

I usually have 6 fenders, larger than I really need but the added cushioning can be good for a hard pontoon mooring when it's gusty and on my own. 2 of the 6 are long and tend to go amidships when mooring as it saves adjusting up or down.

Short passages I will hang them on the stern rail, and when coming into marina solo I will put 3 on each side so I only have to reposition one quickly.

When in areas where stern to mooring is common I like tio have two large ball fenders too.

I would say what is unseamanlike about hanging them on the back rail - but then I do that. and have never thought twice about it... until now.... when I look forward to losing sleep and worrying about it endlessly.... :D

Hmm!

People objecting to fenders stowed on the stern on other people's boats. So that'll be at anchor, on a mooring or when underway. Not tied against a harbour wall or in a marina when they will be in use. So, probably some distance away from those who find it offensive.

What other people do on their boats is none of my concern provided it is not unsafe or dangerous (unless obstructing a nav light, obviously). It is not even an inconvenience.

If you don't like it then you won't want to do it on your own boat, but live and let live.

I also have fender stowage problem ......I now have short length of light line with a clip attached to top and bottom of the fender .when doing short coastal hops I clip them horizontally on the guard wires . They are out the way and if still tied to deck eyes /stations etc easy to deploy again.

That's pretty much what I would do if I ran out of cockpit locker space.

After some years I discovered extra stowage space in those lockers - up towards and into the cockpit coamings.

I just lift them onto the side deck and leave them there - do occasionally see one of them dangling if very heeled or choppy so might go for the clip idea. So that way they can be deployed with a kick and no need to wander around untying and tying 10 fenders between anchorages or harbour.
