Can anyone help. I have bought a football pump to inflate my fenders. OK this has worked fine on some, but as always a but, I have two fenders with a screw thread approx 1/2" but the pump needle wont penetrate? needle approx 5cms but I suspect this needs some other form of pump.
Does anyone have any advice please?

I just purchased 4 new fenders and a fender pump which doesn't work. Go to your local tyre shop and get a valve assy for a tubless wheel. this is a pear shaped thing which will attach to any car wheel pump. press the rubber seal against the valve on the fender and it will blow up using the garage air line.

a bit dangerous using a garage air inflator to do this as it has far too much pressure for the fender, and there is a danger of the fender exploding (same problem with pedal bike tyres)

I,ve never understood this pressure restriction on forecourt air lines my push bike takes 75PSI and the car 32.

Thats cause you have high pressure tyres, people who are not pretending to be Lance Armstrong /forums/images/icons/smile.gif have much lower pressure tyres, and the tubes/tyres cannt take the sort of pressure that can be applied by air gun. Just cause you are inflating to 40/70 psi doesnt mean that the pressure in the air line is at 40/70 psi. it is more likely to be 90-130 psi. The amount of air needed to go from 70 psi to 130 in a bicycle tyre is not very much, thus a good chance of needing a new tyre

with reference to the danger bit. perhaps who ever uses the pump could remove their finger from the trigger before the fender explodes !!

In boating terms my bike is the Westerly Centaur of the cycling world and I only wear Lycra shorts in private.
So its a volume thing then not pressure!

Depending on the make of the fenders, you may be able to buy the specific pump adapters. Both Polyform and Anchor Marine adapters are available.

Alternatively, I have managed to pump up some fenders without any adapter at all. Just hold the end of the hose tight against the valve as you pump. This works with a car foot pump for example. Fenders do not need to be hard. If they have some give in them, it spreads the load on the hull.

The best fender pump is a bosch air pump - rechargable batteries - looks just like an electric drill - last ages but has a recharger unit anyway - I just pop it into fenders and in a few seconds they ar eup to pressure. No wires. No hassle.
Got mine for £25 from HomeBase - they were being cleared out and had a retail of about £60.
