Fenders and catamarans

Definitely a flogging offence and the start of a slippery slope into decline ......... before you know where you are you'll be leaving the ensign up after sunset and wearing a reefer with brass buttons instead of black ......... where will it all end?

I don't care if I lose a few per season, I just nip back into the local tyre place and grab a few more. This has an added advantage that it keeps them clean, nothing worse than seeing fenders with weed hanging off them.

When I started sailing in monohulls I was always advised that it was good practice to bring the fenders onboard once you are underway.

Although they become a trip-hazard on the deck (unless you faff about stowing them away!), leaving them over the side is asking for trouble with them dragging in the sea slowing the boat and causing possible loss of the fender.

However, on my cat they never touch the sea (unless it's very rough) so why not just leave them hanging over the side out of the way (so to speak!).

Any thoughts?

Oh Dear¬!

Richard, it appears by your photo that you are a father with two sons (correct?). The whole point of sailing is, well, the kind you do at least, is to look Cool and have fun.

Fenders over the side is, "NOT" cool, one more time, "NOT" Cool. Maybe your not reading it right. A yacht with fenders over the side is "NOT" cool.

Right now we have that sorted. I am sure you will find some place to put them.

Happy Sailing!

PS To improve the level of "cool" that your kids hold you in (owning a yacht is pretty cool), why not invest £50 in a second hand Kiteboard and £25 in a Kite board Harness and connect yourself to the Topping lift and do some wakeboarding off the stern (not in a channel or area where others yachts are) ;-)

A nice idea James, but if I suddenly appeared in a music video with Titchy Strider (must be a short guy/girl with long legs I guess??) I can guarantee that in my kids eyes appearing in music videos would suddenly be really hot! (or does that mean the same as really cool?)

However, you're definitely on the right track as I bought a windsurfer at the Boat Show in September and that's going down to the Med as well this year to keep the kids occupied. I don't think I'll be going on it as I tried one about 20 years ago and I can still see the pity in the eyes of strangers on the beach.

Anyway, many thanks to those of you who took the time to respond.

With hindsight and taking up James' point, I guess that I should have started my post with something like "I'm interested in enjoying my sailing and my life and not concerned about sailing etiquette except where it relates to sound good sense and/or consideration for others".

Perhaps some matters of "sound good sense" are different for cats vs monohulls - but that's a whole new debate!

See you later!

Richard
