Fender Socks

Evening All,

Most definitely a lively discussion !

Thanks for the ideas, I'll try the tights (some nice fleecy ones should be OK !) and may have to learn how to sow using a sowing machine ;-)

Cheers

I get on quite well with the cable tie method - I cut the tail at an angle so it is pointed and threads through the fender sock material. When done & pulled tight I trim off the end.

I agree that works, but it isn't what they tell you to do. By not using their method, sewing a cord pocket instead, you can get at least another fender, maybe two, out of the tubular length of cloth.

Happy New Year All !

Have done a quick search but didn't come up trumps, has any one got any cheap ways of making fender socks, she's got 4 new fenders and would like to cover these and re-cover the other fenders currently on their - I've seen kits for 35 quid which would do 5 to 6 fenders but any other ideas?

Cheers

Stu

Beforewe leftthe UK friends taught SWMBO how to make socks from the polishing muslin bought in rolls very cheaply from Lymington's Saturday street market. This polish ( small 'p') cloth is a double layer of soft muslin in tubular form. I cannot remember the exact process but it involved pulling a length over the whole fender, peeling back the outer layer then tying the inner layer at one end ( tied like a strangle hold around the cloth and the fender eye , nothing complicated) before folding the outer layer back over itself and down to t'other end where it was again tied off, this time IIRC simply knotted. This technique worked very well even with the large round buoy fenders we carried as well as the regular double ended cylindrical ones . Cheap, non scratching and polished the hull at the same time, no need to wash when dirty just put a new one on

The other option would be to use diving cylinder mesh. Because its a diamond pattern it is quite stretchy so likely to fit fenders.

Got an interest in this company that you'd like to declare?

+1........do tell !!

I don't think he has to declare the interest inasmuch as its self evident!

I wish people would be honest about promoting their own products. It was pretty transparent from his first post, or perhaps I have been on here too long and can spot the cynical self promotion too quickly?

Primark light blue thick tights at 2 pounds a pair. Does 2 reasonable sized fenders. My daughter put me on to them. Seem soft enough. I will report back how they get on!!

£18.00 a pair. Its the larger double thickness covers that are listed on the site as one. The fender-socks.co.uk are held on each end with zip ties that can damage topsides....and are just for cosmetics only, they provide no gelcoat protection at all!

£9 each sounds pretty reasonable for a top end product and i like to support uk industry.

fenders often take a lot of punishment and a high quality durable sock may well prove an economical move.

9 posts in 9 years! wow!
