Can anyone recommend rope for my fenders? I was helping a chap the other day and he had lovely stuff that looked strong yet was no more than 5mm I reckon. It was kind of shiny but not in a nylon way... very easy to tie up and mess with.

Of course I didn't think to ask where he got it from....

Cheers - think i'll just go for bog standard stuff too. Just whatever the stuff the other boat had over the weekend was a dream to work with

I had some fender ropes made up by You Boat in Gosport recently and they were one of the few things which I felt were good value. We needed a custom length and they made them up for me putting the eyelets on the end of the rope for the princely sum of £3 a pop.

Henry :)

Cheers for the info. I would be buying one big length and cutting to size, I have no use for splices at the top of the rope and my fenders are the type where you put the rope through the whole fender and make a knot at the bottom

My preference is 3 strand 10mm nylon with spliced on stainless clips at a suitable length, and spliced to the fender. I have mine set that I clip to the lower guard wire for pontoons and the upper for other boats. Simple and quick to use. Splicing three strand is not that hard to learn, and once you have the knack a very satisfying sofa activity at a time when the forum gets a bit dull.

I use a length of spare to make the dog's lead.

Sounds excellent - fancy taking a pic next time you're at the boat? :)

Yep, not a problem. Just had a look through my photos, but not one shows the fenders up close. At the boat tomorrow evening so I will take some snaps then. Hope they're clean !

Quick, adjustable heights and secure. Works for me.

Could it have been Kevlar rope ?
Raggies use it.

Its thin, very very strong , soft and looks a bit worn/frayed .

Only stinker I have seen it on is Iangrants (the raggie who converted to a nelson type SD boat Alice) ???
He had it on the davits in place of wire cable.

Anyone know what happened to him ?

No Daka that's not the stuff. I'm going to take a picture of it this weekend. It looks exactly like the shiny stretchy bungee cord... but it's not stretchy!!

Photos of my 3 strand spliced lines attached to previous thread above.

Thanks a lot mate, you've inspired me... I may get away with putting a clip on at the end and moving between the stainless rail and the stainless rope as I need to adjust heights

I find my crew (all women who seem to have trouble with any form of complex nautical instruction !) being told lower, upper or up and over to lower - fairly easy to understand !

Alt, I got packs of pre-spliced Fender Ropes in Marine Direct in Swords, Co. Dublin.
They come in packs of 6. Can’t remember the price, but very reasonable.
They are a joy to use, and look good.

"Why Not"
