Our fenders have over time acquired some sticky gunge which in turn leaves patches of sticky black/grey gunge on the top sides. What is the best (economical) thing to use to clean it off - White Spirit/meths etc? I don't want to use anything which will slowly dissolve the fender material. I see you can buy 'fender cleaner' product at £9.99 for 500ml but all I see there is "kerching kerching yachtie market", surely there is nothing magic in these products.

Cillit Bang Black Mould Remover spray is cheap(stinks of chlorine and bleach)and removes almost everything. Just don't get it anywhere near any clothes you don't want to ruin.

I use cif with a green kitchen scourer. works a treat leaves the fender really clean a bit of elbow grease but cheap as chips

After cleaning ,it is helpful to wax the fender with your choice of auto/boat wax. It helps delay the "sticky stuff's" return.

You can make fender covers from stretchy leggings, etc

Thanks everyone. I did wonder if it was a sign of the material suffering UV deg. It sounds as though a clean up and some cheap fender covers will be the way forward.

We (well, SWMBO actually, as it was classed as a pink job) used to have an annual ritual cleaning of the fenders. She used acetone and a scotch pad. Then she suddenly got the idea that fender covers would be good. Made some with cheapo fleece off eBay and she hasn't cleaned fenders since. Covers last about three years before they become too tatty but cost pence for the materials and it takes about a day to make 8 for our fenders.
