No I don't give a flying fig about fenders hanging over the side of the boat

here

and here

however, some people clearly take the whole matter seriosuly

Searush says that he would bring his fenders inboard for any journeys of longer than 20M

I think he means meters not miles

However, how long would a journey have to be to get you to bring you fenders aboard?

feel free to put the distance in the title of the post

so would it be like searush 20m

or would it be 200m

20 miles

never

I have to say that fender etiquette varies from place to place

full deployment at all times on the broads or up the Nene is only sensible

I'd leave them out within the same harbour (unless you take the whole of, say, Poole as one harbour). Hoick them onto the side deck if motoring to somewhere nearby. But I very rarely do either of those, so they go away in the locker every time.

Rules are different on inland waterways.

lifted as i leave the berth & stowed aboard as soon as practicable. dependent if crewed or s/handed as to how long it takes :)

Since I'm often single-handed, if the wind isn't blowing the boat onto the berth I often take the fenders in before I leave. One less job to do while steering down the river dodging the rowers :)

I try to bring mine in before I set sail, but as I generally sail single-handedly I sometimes leave them out. This is on the basis that I would prefer to look a bit untidy and maybe lose a £12 fender than go forward with the boat under autopilot with the slight risk of a MOB.

I can't believe we're having this discussion! You put the fenders out when you come alongside, and put them away again when you leave. If you take a trip across the harbour you do what the hell you like to avoid damage to yourself and others.

Where does 'etiquette' come into it.

How can a fender cause offence?

all too easily

of course fenders can cause offense

there have been times when I have been outraged to the point of apoplexy when I see people doing it wrong

are you a man of no passion....no standards?

with attitudes such as yours the empire will crumble away to meaningless

oh hang on...

Assume a cockup - fenders ready

I used to take the fenders in at the soonest possible moment.

Nowadays I leave them out while motoring in the marina and in a stituation where:

a) an engine failure
b) a rope round the prop
c) a cock-up on my part
d) someone else's cock-up
are likely to cause a close-quarters situation and possible collision.

You can probably guess what caused me to change my strategy.

I don't like to see fenders out under way, but I have ceased to be judgmental about it. On the scale of wrongs it counts pretty low on my list, but then I don't even care if people fly the wrong ensign upside-down from the wrong part of the boat.

I believe that as many people as possible should leave their fenders unstowed, so that they ultimately fall into the sea so we can pick them up. 3 last year

Fender etiquette

I'm self taught so I probably do lots of things that others consider wrong. My question regarding fenders is ,where they should be tied. I recently had to replace a guard wire that had chafed through. The rigger who replaced it said that it was caused by the fenders hanging from it. I now hang them from the holes in the toe rail (his advice). Where does that sit regarding etiquette? Thanks. Alan

I have no idea if this is correct or not (and tbh I don't lose sleep over it) but just up and down the river I more often than not just leave them down, open water for any distance and they're taken in and stowed.

Fenders

We have a Macgreggor 26x we leave ours out all the time !
It helps right us when we heel to much in a F2 and the sea in greater than slight and also adds to the bouyancy when we get turned over on Wells Bar.......

We have 2 fenders as big as space hoppers from the PO is there an etiquette about the size of ones fenders ?

These are a vital bit of kit when tieing up alongside big stone walls. The only problem is what to do with them once on passage. I'm lucky that they will fit in the aft cabin - providing no-one is berthed in it!:D

From a previous post a few hours ago

Anything up to a mile or so, they get tucked onto the side decks, over a mile, put in lockers & brought out again when needed.

No mention of chucking into the aft cabin here then?
