Fender clips

Having moved to the coast we now have to get into the habit of removing and re-attaching fenders every time we leave and return to the mooring. Our fenders are quite weighty and ideally I want to find something simpler and safer than having to tie them to the rail, especially as SWMBO does most of the deck work.

I've come across these

Do you usually have your fenders at the same height?

If so you might consider what we've done for years. I fasten a length of 6mm three-strand line to the fender eye and add a suitable plastic hook to the other end.

To attach the fender: lie it on deck, pass the line out, around a stanchion at mid-wire level, back to the fender, and clip the plastic hook to the eye splice. When deploying, just push the fender off the deck. It is then suspended by the line passing around the stanchion immediately above the mid-height guard wire.

Over ten years we've never had this arrangement come undone.

If the fender needs to be set at a different height the line can simply be tied appropriately.

Spi D - Thanks for the link to the Clamcleat but I think I prefer the Fastfender as it's a really quick push/twist job done with one hand jobbie so you've still got spare hand to hang on with.

Coaster - Neat idea I hadn't thought of. Only problem is Brooms supplied sausage fenders on steroids so they're too big to go under or over the wires, they have to go over the guardrails. In fact the aft ones won't even lie on the deck properly.

My fenders are used in many situations, so adjusting them to right height while fitting is the easy way in my case.

I have all my fenders on inglefield clips, genuine ex royal navy gunmetal types. An old bunting t osser gave em to me, used to be for flying the ensign off the back of a minesweeper.

EDIT: Aw come on.. soddin swear filter will not even let you say pancake ******.

I leave mine tied up but hook them onto the rails with "inner tent hooks" !! about a six pounds for a pack of five, attach to bottom of fender with cable ties, works a treat.

Being able to alter fender height quickly, as well as attach/remove the fenders, is very helpful.

That website is a bit Mickey Mouse but I believe you can get them from Mailspeed and they are usually found for a good price at boat shows, too.

Hi, we tried fender clips several years ago as not everyone is happy with tying knots. It can also be a bit of a nuisance if you're rafting one minute and going through a lock later, continual height adjustments can be a pain to some deck hands.

On our boat we use a 'Clove Hitch, tied off with the 'bite' in the tail end which gives quick release and security. Mostly cos I'm not a fan of clips. To be fair the demonstration video was excellent and the single handed operation made to look very simple.

The top video would have been even more impressive had the 'numpty' on the VT not use a 'granny' knot as a stopper though.:disgust:
