The Boats on jacks for a few months. I am doing all those winter jobs, one of which is cleaning the lock deposits off the fenders.

I have been using Fender Socks, they sadly lasted only two seasons, maybe thats the Thames, My handling skills or West Marine USA's product.

So to end the story, cleaning the Fenders this year, I used a Dish Washer tablet, a Jay Cloth and a well worn Scotch pad.

Came out just like the dishes !

ps. Checked them yesterday and they hadn't disolved.

pps. Yer, I know people have probably been using this trick for centuries, but no one ever told me.

Yes, I did exactly what you suggested, and it was a disaster /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The Dishwasher tab worked OK on the strings, but the varnish all came off, not helped by the scrubbing pad....

My Fender is ruined /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Sorry to hear about your fenders.

My discovery comes with the usual Heath, Yawn & Safety warnings.

I think my fenders are Anchor brand or something like that.

No ill effects so far, fingers crossed.

I did apply some American cockpit shine type stuff to them afterwards, though they did not look like they had lost their shine.

Still, when I get back home and find 8 large blobs of white gunk on the shed floor, you'll be the second to know.

PS: Fenders like that must play hell with the Gel Coat. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's the Fender Socks that mess up the Gel Coat, they retain all the grit and turn into soapless Brillo Pads.

Like the tips on fender cleaning. I've found the best success with Cillitbang, Astonish scrub & scratchy sponge, but might try your route next time.

Make sure you wax them now...makes light work of cleaning them (though maybe that's what that "American cockpit shine" stuff you're using is).

Look forward to seeing your shiny whites bobby about on the tidal Thames /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

A quick rub over with the pound shop vinyl floor glaze, seems to keep them clean for a season or so once you have cleaned them. brick cleaner gets the creatures off.
