Hi all

I’m going to make my first transit of the Crinan canal (west coast Scotland) in a few weeks and as of yet I have not taken my Jeanneau Prestige 30S through a canal.

I’m looking at options for fender boards and I could take the normal approach of using wooden boards, but I’ve come across an alternative that might be more practical / lighter for a MoBo.

In the video above they are using pvc pipe, and I looked at options and can get 68mm gutter down pipe that might do the job.

Q. Have you tried this approach - do you think it will work or should I stick to V1 and use decking boards (or similar)?

Those will not withstand much in the way of bumps and scuffs against rough or corrugated lock walls. You really need a larger area against the fenders and more strength for when loaded between two fenders. Suggest a piece of 10mm 4ftx2ft exterior ply from wickes, cut lengthwise to make two 1ft wide planks. Fix a length of 2x2inch timber along each long edge to each plank. Drill a hold near the end of each top 2x2 to pass line through with a stopper knot. Two coats of any old leftover primer. Light and strong. Works for me.

If you have access old hardwood door , cut 150mm off jamb , drill hole each end , varnish up : perfect
