Fed up of kettles that don't whistle. ..

You don't need a whistle and it is certainly not essential by a long shot. I have had kettles that whistle and many that don't, current big kettle does not. C'mon, it's just a matter of timing and watching, it's pretty obvious. I don't tend to leave the stove unattended when it is on anyway.

What on earth are you doing on a small boat that you think that a lack of a whistle wastes so much time and gas. Change your habits I suggest.

If nothing else, I find I can keep watch more effectively from the cockpit than the galley.

I think I'll give the Ikea kettle a go, shame my nearest store is four hours away. ..

They deliver....

If your kettle gets to the whistling stage you are wasting gas.......

First trace of steam out of the vent and the gas is off......

That way you don't have to 'saucer' your brew......

Yes, but if you have a fresh water tank, that may not be totally "fresh", you could end up with a somewhat dodgy stomach if not fully boiled. On my boat, I do not drink water directly from the tank, (use for cooking etc) even though it is treated with Aquatabs etc & refilled roughly every 3-4 days when we are aboard.
We drink coffee, with powdered milk,( I am a migraine sufferer so avoid normal milk) so allow it to cool before adding to the cup, to avoid spoiling the milk powder.

A variant of Frank’s Asiatic approach - I fill a stainless steel “air pot” in the galley once a day; it takes two full kettles of boiling water and that gives a day’s supply of boiled water for tea, coffee, instant soup and indeed cocoa.

The water from the tanks has been boiled, but doesn’t need to be boiling.

You do need a good quality (Japanese!) stainless air pot. I’ve used one of these for the past 18 years:

I am a late adopter of gas; paraffin is much cheaper and simpler.

We have had one of these on the boat since 1999.

It’s one of my favourite things. Bit manky on the outside now, but very solid and has a nice whistle.

Highly recommended.

Thanks for the recommendation. I have bought one, tried it at home, excellent whistle, nice pouring, good handle, ticks all the boxes. We will just have to take care not to fill it right up as our previous kettle is probably half the capacity and 2L takes quite a while to boil. Taken it to the boat and it fits nicely, not a modern wide base type.

Yes, you need to be carefull not to overfill, When it starts boiling if it’s too full it will spew out boiling water and eject the whistle....

I wonder how much time and gas I've wasted because the feeble whistle on my boat kettle sounds like a particularly frail vole trying to win a whispering competition in a library.

Can anybody recommend a decent kettle with a loud whistle, and which won't fall apart?
Are you sure it is the kettle? I can't hear mine without my hearing aids in as they "sing" in the frequency range I have lost.
