Favourite sounds

The gentle pop of the cork leaving a whisky bottle is a favorite.

The sounds I don't like is that single quiet knock, snap or crack you hear in the middle of the night which suddenly has you wide awake, but which you never hear again so you can't track it down and put your mind at rest.

the unidentifiable night time noises are deffo the worst

the sound of the anchor chain dragging across the sea bed when the tide turns is always a worry

will it re-set?

so it is not only me being paranoid

Or me !

Had a big crow land on deck one dawn, it frightened the life out of me scrabbling around, sounded like a T-Rex, I was afraid of opening the main hatch for fear of hurting it or more likely it hurting me.

As I watched cravenly through a window I saw it nip off to a neighbouring boat and have a really good chew on the masthead wind instruments.

I'll raise you there.

I was once woken up two mornings running by a goose landing on deck and pecking at the windows.

Favorites;
- Curlews.
- Oyster catchers.
- Glottal stopped gluging as a newly opened bottle of wine is poured.
- Steam whistles (boats and trains).

Worst, so far this year;
- Hissing and ripping; viz http://jamtoday.info/?p=170
- Any mechanical noise I can't immediately identify.

You didn't ask for visual, but I hate it when the depth sounder suddenly drops from 50m to 3! Is it a submarine, log, submerged container? It doesn't matter how sure I am of my nav when this happens I always doubt myself and expect a loud crash.

Hello Dylan one of my favourite sounds is the water lapping against the hull and the wind in the sails just after i have turned off the engine

one of my least favourite is the screaming banshee of a wind generator (some are quiet but not many in my experience) on the yacht next to me or nearby!

well, when this happens on Tigger, I just think of all those "amps" going into my batteries: it makes the noise MUCH more acceptable

Favourites: Tawny owls at dawn, the peaceful silence after turning off the engine.

Least liked: Halyards slapping loudly on forestays in the dead of night, when you know you really should get up and put a strop round them to shut them up, but maybe if you lie in bed awake and wait another 1/2 hour the wind will die down(?)

One of my favourite sounds is the zip on my sleeping bag on a cold night... (so much so that when I hear a zip it makes me smile thinking about either sailing or camping)

Best sound. The silence when you turn the engine off and start sailing.

Worst sound. Slapping on the sugar scoop stern of some horrible plastic charter boat when you are trying to sleep in a badly ventilated, cramped and poorly appointed aft cabin.

The song of a nicely running Seagull outboard.

A dislike is the sound of water gurgling past the galley sink outlet ...... esp when the insides are beginning to feel a bit gurgly themselves.

most irritating the sound of wavelets slapping under the quarter when forced to moor stern into the weather.

Try tieing some fenders in a loop behind the boat.

My worst sound is the engine alarm.

Favourite : absolute silence of a mirror-calm dawn.

A Triumph twin doing a bit of hard work with a small diameter high level exhaust system-Cue the Rickman brothers with their Triumph Mettise specials.

These days the worst is the alarm for an early start........................

A Bolinder beats this hands down ;);)
