Planning a trip - which places (preferably with easy pilotage and mooring) are the best from Cherbourg to Brest?

Thanks!

Depends on what your definition of easy and are you talking about access ashore or anchoring

Here are some of my favourites

Cartret
Granville
Ille Chausey ( weekdays only)
Up the Rance
Pampoil
Anywhere around Brehat
Anywhere up the Trieux river
Anywhere up the Tregiuer river
Perros G
Sept Illes
The little ports tween Lainion and Morlaix
Morlaix
Roscoff area
The Abers
Anywhere in Rade de Brest

Assumes you are happy rock hopping

Avoid
Channel Isles - too expensive
St Malo - crowded
St Q expensive
Trebueran - expensive anchor off in the rocks for free

Get the French Shom charts they much the best - its a great area you will go back time and time again

Brian great list but you missed my favourite ploumanac'h. just round the corner from Perros.

Fergus you need to note the lock times for perros from the webpage. sometimes the Coef is not enough and the lock does not open for days. Also lot of sailing events happening in july and august hence not too much room at the inn.

Don't forget to pack your walking shoes most off these places you have to walk up the hill to the local town.

Hi Fergus,

There are absolutely NO nice places in Brittany. No, definitely NOT! And it's full of French people! I shouldn't even consider going there if were you, much nicer to sail in the Solent and places like that. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

We only go there 'cos it's nearer than the Solent where we'd far sooner holiday. We've had to do that for the last 30 odd years and it isn't fair I say!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

No, I should enjoy a nice holiday on the south coast instead! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Granville, Dielette, Braye, Plouer, Paimpol, Chausey (crowded even on a Tuesday, but a must see).

Anyone else had a problem with fuelling in St Malo (St Servan). It needs a French credit card for self service but I expected to be able to pay at the Capitainerie and was sent across to Dinard - available at half tide only! Won't be back there in a hurry.

St Servan on two separate occasions sent me a snotty letter incorrectly claiming non-payment of berth fees. Fortunately we had kept receipts from them and from St Helier to prove we had paid for consecutive nights. I sent copies of these receipts with a polite letter each time, in French, but they didn't bother to reply. The last time was after being at the extremity of the visitors pontoon in a NW gale where we had to double up lines, fitted with rubber snubbers and the boat was pitching wildly - to the point where the people in the folkboat next to us broke a warp and ended up sleeping on board our boat (then a W33) because theirs was untenable.

In the unlikely event we ever go back to St Malo we will lock into the inner basin.

[/ QUOTE ]All the places mentioned, but remember that with the tidal range and strength - if entering a river marina the currents can be treacherous off slack. Especial mention to include Lezardrieux (anchor a bit downstream from the marinas) with a trip later, up the most beautiful river scenery around, to Pontrieux, which can be accessed an hour or so off HW (lock).

and if you are going to do Pontrieux try and match arrival with the festival - can't remember the name but it revolves around washerwomen! Last Saturday in August?

Generally try to match up visits with festivals of local events - weekly pig roast in Treguir on Thursdays? - but avoid really big ones like Paimpol's as you will find a berth a problem (and not a lot of really local anchoring to that venue!)

Went into St Servan last weekend. Very full and struggled to find a berth. Found one which the adjoining owners said was free as owner was out of the water. Went to the Capitanierie who said the owner might go back in the water that night (sat). Very unhelpful so we went into Vaubin. Plenty of room and very laid back attitude. Will always go back there or into Rance.

At least it isn't just me then! I thought they had a problem perhaps with one of their collectors pocketing the fees, once was a mistake twice is persecution and an apology would have been nice since I could prove 100% their error.
