After an irritating hour sorting out a domestic plumbing malfunction I thought I'd cheer myself up by posting a photo I took on Saturday at the Naze. I have a lot of favourite birds and these are some of them, though hard to catch as they keep running like mad (not the black-headed gull in the background);

CPO on a Ton class sweeper said, when a sprog asked what sort of bird was sitting on the aerials,

"Her Majesty's Royal Navy recognises three birds: the high flying shitehawk, the low flying shitehawk, and the tip-arse duck."

You now have me confused as to which one they are.

I'm a bit of a late-comer to sailing, spent most of my life living in the midlands, most of my spare time in the mountains. This means that my seabird recognition skills aint the best!
I was surprised to see 2 penguins out in The Wash last year, took me a while to find out that they were Razorbills. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I carry a bird-spotting book onboard now!

Both the high and low flying shite hawks have made a hell of a mess of my deck over the last couple of weeks, they must have raided the bins of the local curry house.

I found it a bit hard to see what they are, presumably shearwaters. We don't get many around here; the nearest I've seen them was off Devon, and only in your numbers in Ireland. Apart from gulls, which are fine in their own way, but hard to love, I like all seabirds, especially fulmars, which come to visit you, auky things, which always look smart, and gannets, which are the whitest things on the planet.

Quite correct, they are Shearwaters. And quite true I have never seen one in the North Sea either. But the photo is off the East Coast of Terceira in the Azores. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
