Hi,

there was a discussion about bad sailing films. The most favorite sailing films (or at least films with some maritime context) are also interesting.

my favorites are:
- Perfect Storm
- White Squall
- Master and Commander
- The Boat (Mini Series) (although it has nothing to do with sailing)

What are your favorite films?

Cheers,
Peter

Pirates of the Caribbean. (Not the second one)

Norrington:You are without doubt the worst pirate I've ever heard of.
Jack Sparrow: But you have heard of me.

Harbormaster: Hold up there, you. It's a shilling to tie up your boat at the dock... and I shall need to know your name.
Jack Sparrow: What do you say to three shillings and we forget the name.
Harbormaster: Welcome to Port Royal, Mr. Smith.

Jack Sparrow: Why is the rum gone?
Elizabeth: One: because it is a vile drink that turns even the most respectable men into complete scoundrels. Two: that signal is over a thousand feet high. The entire royal navy is out looking for me, do you think there is even the slightest chance they wont see it?
Jack Sparrow: But why is the rum gone?

Elizabeth: So that's it, then? That's the secret, grand adventure of the infamous Jack Sparrow. You spent three days lying on a beach drinking rum.
Jack Sparrow: Welcome to the Caribbean, love.

Jack Sparrow: Not just the Spanish Main, luv. The entire ocean. The entire wo'ld. Wherever we want to go, we'll go. That's what a ship is, you know. It's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs but what a ship is... what the Black Pearl (Substitue the name of your own boat here) really is... is freedom.

Captains Courageous-for the brilliant footage of Grand Banks schooners sailing hard under full sail..
Captain Ron-Probably seem facile to a Uk audience but was definitely written by a Caribbean boatbum from experiences.
Swallows and Amazons-tolerable for the scenery and innocent fun of being on the water mucking about in boats

It's a miserably short list, isn't it? Is this connected to the catastrophic reputation of boat-based series on TV? I guess sailing is regarded with blank incomprehension by most other than us obsessives.

No story line - think they were hoping to cash in on US interest in Americas Cup. Understand they failed.

T'was filmed on the water off Freo in West Oz using two rebranded 12 metres from (I think) Kokaburra syndicate - would have been around 1991/92.

Despite lots of sailing coaches the obvuosly non sailing actors managed to ram each other several times. It stopped being funny to watch when one crew member was killed and they almost sank one yacht.

As local at the time it was all v. interesting and indeed lucrative.

The producers paid many local yotties to drift around on their own boats to create a 'spectator' fleet - not a bad way to spend a few months in the Oz summer - and the money was exceptional!

Saving the best till last..
Waterworld-for all the go faster catamaran types out there
Its still a minority branch of filmmaking though /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Edit For catamaran read multihull of course, duh

Not really a film but the TV series of swallows and amazons was good when I watched it (as a kid).

Wind has too much whooping, theatrical music and clean cut American white grins for my taste.

I second pirates of the carribean as having the best line:
Wherever we want to go, we'll go. That's what a ship is, you know. It's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs but what a ship is... what the Black Pearl (Substitue the name of your own boat here) really is... is freedom.

Surprising nobody has made a film about Slocum's trip.

the riddle of the sands

[/ QUOTE ] I'm in full agreement. Recently bought a copy on DVD, from Amazon, and thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Takes a while to get used to the letter box (Cinemascope?) format though.

Note to self: must rescue it from mate, who has had it on extended loan, seeing him tonight.

Dove, must be mid 80's about a young guy who sails around the world.

And sailing/adventure, 70's documovie, "World safari" parts 1 2 and 3. Alby Mangal (spelling) sails part way around the world before his boat catches fire and burns to nothing leaving his sailing dreams temporarily shattered.

A bit slapstick, but good!

These guys scare me. The helm letting go of the helm during a broach is not something I'd want to see!

Ignore that, no MoB watch, they all look away from the MoB immediately and try to sort the boat, no life rings, nothing.

What a mess, lucky for the body she was picked up, scary stuff.
