What does it take to learn a lesson?
After a guy got killed in Braye Harbour, Alderney using an o/b to hold a dinghy against a ship's side to do some painting, I had a kill cord fitted to my o/b.

Having seen the state of the boy that got killed at Southampton a few years back I never ever go without a kill cord even on the river.

i dont think i am alone when i say that i have had to explain
to more than one person, what the kill cord is for, and not as
was one soul stated "its meant to stop people stealing the
boat/outboard" , his logic was he could take his cord off the
boat and render it safe from theft,
i will be making a point of showing him and one or two others
this story, with the footnote of you have been warned.
that said i hope these guys recover, that's a real sore
way to learn a lesson.

This bloke was lucky, he got out of the circle of death without getting hit. It's quite popular to ride 'chariot' style in the Bahamas (where I took this film), standing up holding the painter like reins and operating the throttle via an extension; easy to lose it when you hit a wake.

We heard the Bxhm Coastguard putting out calls to see if anyone was nearby and could tell them what was going on.... I guess they had calls on the phone..
It was pretty clear that they had no clear idea what was going on at first.... they were saying a "Large powerboat" ....
Was a great day with no sea and 9-10 knots of wind from the NE or so....
They are lucky to be alive.

im going out tomorrow to buy a small engine for my dinghy and it will have a kill cord.

I purchased a 2.2 suzi to fit to my lads quicksilver inflatable, quite an old motor with no kill cord.. the first thing I did was buy one and wired it in to the on / off switch.. he now has an outboard with kill cord and I'll be making sure he's educated on its use

no probs.. I'll see if I can dig it out, got it off Ebay if I remember correctly, was easy to fit but was based on my knowledge not instructions from the supplier of the switch so i'll try to explain or send you some pictures

I saw this on a Scuttlebutt thread. Why aren't speedboats fitted with simple lap belts? I'm sure racing boats use full harnesses & crash helmets, but a simple webbing strap with an s/s Q/R buckle like plane use would stop people getting throw out. Cheap & easy to buy & fit, they don't even need to be that strong - just to keep you in your seat when in rough water or wash.
When kayaking (or driving fast) I brace my knees against the dash/ deck or whatever. Is there no similar option with speed boats?

OK, pointless little speed boats have never interested me, but isn't it REALLY uncomfortable being bounced up & down in your seat? I would expect a lapbelt to significantly reduce the discomfort. But what do I know?
