Fastnet Fleet Tracking

I'm confused. Why would some opt to go north of Lands End around the TSS?

:)

Wind.. It's a north west wind at moment. Yacht don't go in straight lines to destinations like motorboats. I guess they are beating North then will tack. Or wait for the forecast southwesterly to arrive.

Well, by eye on the tracker site map I'm not sure the route south of the TSS is significantly shorter.
In practice most if not all of these boats will be using some or other route optimisation software which will guide their choice based on present and forecast wind and currents.

(In case any reader is unaware, entry into the TSS is specifically prohibited under the Sailing Instructions, BTW)

Have a look at the main site , there is a section that explains the three possible routes and why the various types of craft favour different routes etc, as already said all to do with wind direction and skippers in different boats making different calculations

I'm puzzled why you mobo guys are interested are you going over to the dark side. :)

Interesting to follow the progress but at an average of what...4-5 knots over 3-5 days?...not for me thanks. Hell of an endurance test tho and to be admired for sure. Fantastic spectacle seeing them all out there en mass. Love it.

I'm with you Lisilou would of given up already..... quite happy to pootle round the solent at 3 knots but on passage we always make six knots if not the engine goes on.... I have a few friends racing, watching with interest., most well into irish sea now. I see Griff rhys jones is still to round lands end.... that's dedication., when the quick boys are on the way in.

SWMBO currently on RSS Discovery which is stationary about 20km ahead of the main pack She text me and said they had seen a few boats racing but knew no more. Looking at AIS map they currently have about 100 boats due SE of them, The leaders seem to be veering to pass them on their south side but it could be interesting viewing if its light enough with good visibiity
