We have a 1956 Buchannan Yeoman and need to replace some fastenings. As this is our 1st wooden boat any tips or advice would be much appreciated.

The best source of silicon bronze fastenings that I know of is a firm called Anglia Stainless Ltd [they have a website]. Don't be fooled by the name, as well as selling stainless steel fastenings they also took over a firm called Combwich Marine Enterprises that used to specialise in silicon bronze.

Anglia Stainless give excellent service with same-day despatch and postage/packing at low rates. They will accept small orders.

Clean out the countersinks and the screwhead slots, make sure you have a well-fitting screwdriver [a driver bit in a carpenter's brace can be useful and an impact driver sometimes works].

I've found that the old bronze fastenings are often weakened by corrosion and break off inside the hole. A sort of mini-holesaw like MW3030 on lthis web page works well for getting the remains out; you can make them from thin-walled tubing or buy one. Run them at very slow speed and keep blowing out the sawdust. You can also buy similar things, in a range of sizes, from the USA, they are called UnScrewems from Jamestown Distributors but I am reluctant to buy things from the USA because of high import charges.

Keep an eye on burgundyben as well!! Have finally used a bunch of those screws!! Made my passerelle with all bronze screws, also bought a box on E bay, when like us you own wooden boats, can never have too many bronze screws!!

If you keep having problems with screws breaking try heating them with a red hot soldering iron shaped to fit the head.this chars the wood around the screw, the carbon is an excelent lubricant. It is laborious but the hole left will fit the next size up screw. Fourth for Anglia Stainless.

On the basis of the recommendations in this thread I visited Anglia's website and used the facility to ask for a catalogue. This was at the weekend. Had an email yesterday (Monday) asking for my address. The catalogue arrived today. You cannot fault service like that. Browsing through the catalogue I know I have found MY supplier of fixings. Thanks for the tip. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
