I have completed the companionway steps (X5) and want to secure it in such a way that I can quickly remove it to access the bilge in the event of an emergency. Is there an established way of doing this e.g SS barrel bolts?
My steps are secured by two stainless steel barrel bolts at the top, which secure them in place, and two more at the bottom, which holds the bottom in place, but allows you to tilt the steps back if you leave the bottom bolts in place. Handy for having a quick look at the engine. Not explained very well, but the bottom two bolts act as a hinge when engaged, but allow the steps to be lifted out when disengaged.
Much the same on a mono I had some years ago.
The top was secured by a stainless steel bar that dropped into fixed slots on both sides at the top step.
The bottom was slotted with two bars in brackets, so when the steps wer upright after lifting the 'U' shaped bar they could be removed for engine access.
Thanks Danny. You have explained yourself very well. I think I'll follow your advice but as well I'll screw some "U" shaped pieces of ply to the floor to locate the legs of the ladder

Can't really make suggestions without a picture or drawing of what the steps are being fitted to. But surely the decision should have been made before designing and building steps to suit?
Rob there would be a number of ways they can be secured after I built them and I am looking for the best option. (Fasteners are not integral to the design of the steps)
