Faslane Base Facility Closure

At least you have the decency to live in Scotland - where I work, the place is full of Scots - all so very proud of their "country"; but not proud enough to live there /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

strange, but as a Scot, I lived in the east of England since 1986 and only recently left. I have always considered myself as 'British', definitely not 'English', but British none the less. I have always believed we were better collectively as a nation than as any seperate entity. I also joined the 'British' army at the tender age of 15 and was quite happy to do so, and go wherever I was destined to go.
Now, however, I have decided that the whole place as it is now, is just a shithole, sparsely populated by 'Brits' and run by arseholes and I have left the whole lot to those who still believe in England's green and pleasant land, and live in the 50's.
BTW I am still a 'British' tax payer too.
Rant over.........................Bejasus out!!

\'Some animals are more equal than others....\'

The question was raised partly by another, similarly-titled post, and partly by a conversation with a senior manager in one of the relevant businesses - whose job it is, in part, to think about the business implications of such things. Yard closures and contractions are not new, and have not previously initiated a constitutional collapse.

Like others, I was schooled in Scotland, while my father and grandfather were English. Most of my working life has been elsewhere, and I've lived in West Wilts for longer than anywhere else. I have been quite surprised by the antipathy and - to me - racist tone of some of the comments. I don't see such vehemence expressed about incomers from other parts of Europe, or Africa, or Asia...... ( ps I don't want this 'pulled' - I'd rather we discussed this )

Apart from banter, I've always considered myself British and subscribed to support of 'the collective'. The regional differences where I've lived - e.g. Yorkshire, Cornish, Zummerzet - I've cherished as part of the stew. Like others, I think that 'the collective' is stronger than the separate components - but maybe others are hearing this vehemence, this antipathy, and asking themselves why they should go along with it any longer.

Certainly the Irish did...... and quite a few others, now I come to think about it.

I am Scottish and I am British. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I am happy and proud to be both. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif There are also a hell of a lot of English people living here in Scotland, I have no problem with that. They are English but also British and are proud of their heritage. What's wrong with that?? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I grew up in Glasgow but I don't live there anymore, does that mean I am not a Glaswegian?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I didn't sail my boat today does that mean I am not a sailor anymore??? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

"You just know it will all be a ghastly mess. One that we, the English idiot taxpayer will have to foot the bill for in the end "

surprisingly, perhaps, the above suggestion that , uniquely on this planet, the scots are totally incapable of governing their own country gives some credence to the phrase " english idiot ". /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

since i believe in independence as a principle, not as an economic miracle, i`ll be laughing if we get it /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
ps - anyway, it can`t get any worse imho

i may be wrong, but i believe there are a few english persons who live furth of your golden shores, a lot of your so-called criminal classes live on the costa bravo, even some esteemed forumites have been known to post from liveaboard addresses furth of the aforesaid shores /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Three points:

1 If the Scots are so capable of running their country why does the English and Welsh taxpayer have to pour £11,000,000,000 a year into the Scottish economy.

2 Having suffered for 10 years the way 2 Scotsmen have run the British government I can see no sign of competence sufficient to run a hot dog stand.

3 We have had this sort of debate peridoically for several years. It has traditionally been carried out in an intelligent and moderately polite way. Why do you have to spoil it by substituting common abuse for reasoned arguement?

1. Dunno.........cause your daft

2. see above............seriously somebody voted the idiots in and I don't think you can blame that one on the Scots. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

3. Perhaps it's time to draw a veil over this thread before it self destructs.

not quite sure what you mean by " common abuse " but the above quote fr4om your earlier post will no doubt be the " reasoned argument "

I suspect we can - I seem to remember reading at the time of the last election that if it had been an England-only election the Tories would have won. It was the Taffs and Jox that saddled us with this lot.
