Browsing thru a colour suppliment article on mens err attire it sateted that the stripped sailors woolies etc derived from the idea of making sailors more visable if they fell overthe rail.....a little known fact?

The patterns on Guernsey sweaters varies according to the village the fisherman came from - makes it easier to identify the corpse.

for making it such blame Coco Chanel. Well, if possible to blame her for looking at fishermen 
La mariniere (Breton stripe jersey) was made for navy, but it was a tradition in Brittany before. Perhaps fishermen there would answer OP's doubts?

I understood that fishermen's jumpers are all different patterns so they could identify the body after it had been in the water a while, but that might just be an old Orcadian saga.
