Depends on circumstances. Nobody has ever called me a thieving bastard. However, I wouldn't resort to your tactics.

Re: Very well said

It's nice, when considering alternatives to our current government, to be reminded just how appalling times were for most people under Mrs T and her utterly barmy crew! The corruption that accompanied her time in office and afterwards was on a hugely different scale to the whisperings about the current gov.
There is at least one similarity between her reign and Mr B's. Both enjoyed massive majorities whilst the opposition were in total disarray as a result of internal squabbles. The Conservatives are changing leaders like underwear and are still highly unlikely to make much of a mark at the next election - particularly given M Howard's misjudgements over Hutton.

Despite being a long time Labour voter, massive majorities do very little for good government. Which is why I hope the the Conservatives do recover their fortunes to be at least a moderately effective opposition. But obviously I hope they don't do too well!

Sonsy Lass might like to consider that politics (perhaps unlike mere popularity) is not just about economics. The Conservative party fell into political near oblivion because they thought it was.

think back to what it was really like

red robbo holding the car industry to ransom, arthur scargill doing his bit, going to the world bank to bail us out, the road to liverpool docks lined with flags and banners exorting us to export, darent send anything thru the docks cause it would get nicked, maurauding miners threatening other miners cause they wouldnt come out on unofficial strike, didnt you watch the prog the other night about it all? going on holiday with 30 quid in your pocket or was it 50?
real workers paradise wasnt it?
whisperings about this lot, what part of the media are you listening to or looking at?

Re: think back to what it was really like

Er obviously a different part to you.

Having clipped the wings of the unions, what kind of a car industry do we have now? And a mining industry? Ooh, and a steel industry? And a railway industry? The seeds of neglect were sown a long time ago, as part of the kicking and screaming programme you seek to evangelise about.

As for the World Bank mortgage, well I don't think the history books will write up economic management of UK plc under Mrs T as anything other than a total disaster. Her laughable social policy created a 'me, me, me' for very, very few and ignored the needs of most. Even this week's Tory leadership have embraced a more moderate approach. 'fraid your 'wealth trickle down' theory is rather too simplistic for me.

Re: think back to what it was really like

Had the unions not been challenged in the 80's we still would not have a car industry, a mining industry, a steel industry etc. today (Railways are a different debate).

In fact, we would be a lot worse off than we are now because the economy and our position in the european world markets generally, would have been further impacted by unrealistic policies, such as jobs-for-life etc.

I generally don't enjoy political threads on the forum, so whilst I feel quite strongly about this, I am going to shut up now!

I agree - and so am I!

Re: saloon bar politics

Actually, I do'nt see the current crisis as being a party political issue .,. but the issues being of significance to us all. In fact the only relevance of party politics is that a weak opposition removes the main constitutional check of a democratic house of commons with a large majority now giving the executive almost unbridled powers in the absence of a second chamber with blocking powers. Bluidy long sentence that .. managed to save 7 commas and 3 full stops for later.

Re: think back to what it was really like

<The seeds of neglect were sown a long time ago, as part of the kicking and screaming programme you seek to evangelise about>

the only seeds that were sown were the ones from the greedy unions pursuit of unsustainable wages.

if you can follow the analogy i will tell a story,
first started o/seas in saudi arabia in 1975 as a fitter, wasnt long before we were being called supervisors, philipinos could do the manual spanner wielding the same as us, same with welders same with the rest of the blue collar workers. went on to angola, egypt and algeria and the story was always the same the third world nationals could do the same blue collar job as us for 1/3 the cost in wages and never mind month on month off year on 2 weeks off was more than sufficient for them. the bottom line wqs they were cheaper than us, the sun went from pages full of jobs fr welders, fitters and electricians to zilch. the third world was out pricing us. the smarty pants like me went on to be supervisors of these guys.
angola was the last bastion of brit skippers, chief engineers and crew on the supply boats, the philipinos came along but they started losing their jobs as well to mariners from kiribati in the pacific, they were cheaper still.
now steel, coal, manufacturing is cheaper from the third world, market forces will always rule. what do you want to do? pay more for steel and coal because it is produced in this country? thats the socialist way but it doesnt work, where does the money come from to prop up these industries? trees? people like me? on your bike matey.
in the long term socialism doesnt work, look at russia , look at china even the last stalwarts of communism are only paying lip service to it now.
and the worst bit is that in our comfortable little lives in our country there are still people who havent grown up and still think that that people like me should have our pips sqeaked. it can only go on for so long then we say no and bugger off or find a way around the taxes, down goes revenues and all of a sudden the socialist republic is broke. when will you ever learn or do you not care in your blind acceptance of socialist dogma?

"in the long term socialism doesnt work, look at russia , look at china " - er... they are communist countries, which are somewhat different.

"when will you ever learn or do you not care in your blind acceptance of socialist dogma?" ....nice patronising, if contradictory tone but I think demoncracy works best for me.

Now, back to boating.... :-)
