Farewell from Simonjk weatherman? Signature too commercial?

Perhaps Simon should be given a page in the print mag to share some of his skills, followed up my a comment that he posts latest on the forum. I am sure that would help circulation of the print version and get even more people reading / posting on here.

Must admit to being a little confused about www.sailingweather.co.uk and www.weatherweb.co.uk uk and where the crossover is, but that's minor compared to the quality and reliability of forcast.

Perhaps the way forward is similar to KTL and the tie up with visitmyharbour.com if yw doesn't take the bait???

So what are your views on Dylan Winter and Keep Turning Left?

Dylan contributes a lot outside of ktl... He regularly puts videos embedded here, and he contributes to the debate and discourse here in other ways as well... Often starting threads totally outside of ktl...

I think its important to understand that I am not per se Anti-simon... I am just expressing a concern, and frankly, hoping to encourage him to put more information here in the forum... Clearly his forecasts are of very high quality, and of value to a lot of people, but we do have to be wary of setting precent...

Hi Simon,

you're welcome; I have rudimentary knowledge of metereology from sailing and flying ( interested photographer not pilot ) but long since decided that if people with super-computers aren't too sure, I'm best off sticking with the basics and listening to people like yourself !

So, the criteria for having a commercial link is that you make 'other contributions to debates'?

I think that simon regularly contributes to the mag... The articles ive see from him are excellent, and i would like to see more...

I think the criteris for a commercial link is clearly laid down in the rules.

But clearly there is value to the forum from informed contributors, and as such, those rules are occasionally relaxed/broken.

If someone new were to come on here and make no contributin outside of plugging a commercial service, they would get short shrift.

Its about being a part of the comminity, versus just profiting from the community.

There has been considerable problems in the past, witness the csail debacle, with members effectivley trading/profiting from the comminity, and abusing that position...

Its a fineline that needs to be kept an eye on.

May I introduce Mr Pot to Mr Kettle ?!

My signature is a website I make an annual loss on, maybe I should get the difference in funding back from the forums please ?! :)

Free intelligent weather forecasts seems a good thing to me, and may even save lives.

Hi Guys,

YBW have informed me that they have received complaints about the signature on my posting being 'too commercial' and have (politely) asked me to remove references to my courses.

You may remember a few years back this issue was raised and at that time you felt that an exception should be made in my case as the service I was offering was of direct use to sailors, and that you understood the level of information I was providing could not be done completely non-commercially.

If forum users (and YBW) now feel that that position has changed then I'll reluctantly stop posting to the forum.

The moderators will no doubt monitor your responses, as indeed will I. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on this.

It's a shame because I was about to post a Round the Island Race forecast :(

Best wishes and possibly 'farewell',
Simon

For Gods sake this is a safety issue the weather forecast is not for fun we base our decision to go offshore to France the CI etc based on forecasts and Simons are especially valuable.
So IPC value other advertisers interests above our safety interests - what a sad day

Unfortunately I don't know the ins and outs of everything that happened in the forums before I began working here. In any case, this issue was cleared up with Simon before the thread had started.
I must say that you have been dealt a bit of a sh**ty stick in this respect.
I remember a misunderstanding re. one of my posts a while ago.
It looks like you didn't get much of a handover and maybe Dan didn't when he took over either.

Would it be an idea (I know you're busy) to create a document or a log that stands as a reference for any future Moderators to refer to?

What is also a bit sad is those posts from people who have posted, still hot under the collar, having only read the first post, not having seen the resolution later in the thread.

Now, i normally dont get annoyed, But really, try to keep up at the back and actually read and try to understand what is being written before wading in with a stupid comment.

I fully comply with the forum rules in regards to links, But its not links that are being discussed, its behaviours.

Of course if you object to my having a opininion, or departing from the party pc line, then say so.

Photodog,

no stupidity here pal ( though using such a term does you little credit ), you're moaning about Simon - useful forecast info - while advertising yourself, a photo business - simple as that.

Fancy a poll on how many people here prefer a weather forecast to a photograph ? I say that as a pro' photographer ! :)

I don't have a problem with people having business links in their signature areas. I would, in general, much prefer to do business with someone I have maybe had an exchange of views with on here etc. I have refered to the Anderson 22 site, obviously non commercial etc and Page One Photography, commercial but of no real use to me. And all the time to Dylan's KTL!

The only reason I don't have the company I work for on here is I think there would be a lack of Forumites in my part of Nottingham wanting to sell their house!

But it is a fine line and anyone who, in general, doesn't add to the general knowledge base and is only here to promote their business should be politely reminded of the " rules"!

Agree 100%

What a good idea about the handover log......especially from one who has a post count of <3,000.

;);):D:D

Sorry, but it only you who is discussing behaviours.

You are the only one who appears to have some sore of pre-requsite that anybody including a commercial link should be taking part in meaningful discussions.

I really don't need to hear Simon's views on Rocna, or Bavaria keels, or defaced blue ensigns - i am happy with him the way he is thank you!

Double standards

I don't ythink you do yourself any favours with that reply, nor the winges about putting links in signatures. If I recall correctly in an early post you comment how you do well from people coming to your website, and yet you are trying to justify complaining about someone who does provide a free service to us all.

Of course you could argue that the pics on your site are there for enjoyment and that we get pleasure from them, but ......

I was taught a long time ago to admit when I was wrong and move on, not to dig myself deeper in ... a lesson that perhaps need to be spread around a bit doncha agree?

Come on P-dog - do the decent thing and retract.
