I was just wondering if I wanted a overnighter at Fambridge wether to use the river pontoon or go into the marina , is there any difference in charges ? , what would be easier to do single handed the river with tides or marina with less room

Could just be this Sunday ;)

If it were me, I'd go for the pontoon a)because you can use the tide to help you and b) there's usually people around to take a line for you anyway. Don't know about price difference, but I think it was £12 a night when we were there a few weeks back.

Lots of visitors come into the marina, with springs and a deep draft you might be retricted on access or drag in the soft mud ! There seems to be a numbers of empty berths at present esp. at the eastern end. To contact the office, I suggest using the mobile rather than Ch80 as they do not seem to answer VHF :-)

Marine more sheltered, and little to no tidal stream. Good on shore facilties, bar and cafe. Further to walk to the Ferry Boat, albeit a pleasant one.

the bar and club house was shut last time we went into the marina a fortnight or so ago. seems its a franchise and they can't relet it. so we walked all the way to the Ferry Boat when we had expected to eat in the marina.

is it a good place to lay up for the winter?

Depends on what you need for layup?
There are no shops in the village so if you are looking to stay on board it is going to be difficult unless you have a car.

However the yards (there ate two of them) are quite well equipped with water Elec Etc, both have showers and are pretty safe.. (given that no boat yard is totally secure)..

The Ferry Boat does (or used to... new landlord) pretty good pub grub.. There is a railway station with an hourly service to London..

So far, despite concerns to the contrary, the new landlord has done nothing bad to the place, rather the opposite actually (other than fitting a large screen telly in the conservatory but with gritted teeth I suppose I can understand the motivation behind showing the footy especially as he's an ex-player!)

The grub is excellent IMO, plenty of choice and we haven't had a bad meal in there yet (and we've had a fair few). Good beer too

It has, though, got a lot busier in there this year compared to last year and I'd recomment getting there early or phoning ahead to book - we, for example, couldn't get Sunday lunch at just after 1:00pm back in the spring as they were already stacked up with orders and no chance of getting a table for hours

There are rumours about plans to revamp the central part of the pub which I don't much like the sound of but then they are just rumours. We'll see

The landlord is the marina so Toby told me. They have installed the 'keen' new couple to run the place.

Not quite

Yacht Havens Ltd. are the owners of the property having purchased the freehold from the family that had owned and run it for the last 31 years

The new landlords in the pub sense are tenants of Yacht Havens Ltd. (see http://property.morningadvertiser.co.uk/Property/5519/Essex%20Chelmsford%20-%20Leasehold.html) and as far as I can make it out (it's slightly confusing!) consist of two blokes, one of whom is an ex-pro footballer who doesn't often put in an appearance, and a third fella who is the manager

I understand from Toby that Yacht Havens bouight the pub to stop it being developed as a housing estate as the place is an important for berth holders.. We certainly eat there quite a lot..
