Fambridge - not very impressed.

We decided to visit Fambridge last weekend - they were having their river festival and it sounded like fun. I rang and requested a berth (they were full) so agreed we'd take a mooring buoy for the night.

Apart from 25+ winds on the nose and horizontal rain, our trip from Pyefleet was uneventful if a little arduous.

However, when we arrived at Fambridge we spent 20 mins jilling around trying to hail then on ch80 (as agreed when we rang and as per published data) to determine which buoy to use but apparently, no one was keeping a listening watch - nor was anyone answering the phone. When we finally gave up on that we tried a couple of buoys - none had anything other than single short rope loops to pick up and thread a line through. We were at the top of a big spring tide and I suspect that was what made it impossible to lift the buoy at all to thread a line.

After 20 mins and some seriously hazardous hanging off the boat attempting to reeve our line I finally succeeded. Just as we were shutting off the engine, the buoy riser parted and we were adrift.

Another round of buoy hunting/VHF activity and agility testing took a further 20 mins and we were finally moored. All this in heavy winds and rain. Having no-response on ch80 didn't fill us with confidence in the water taxi, and using the tender was a non-starter due to the weather. We decided to cut our losses and leg it back down river to Burnham Yacht Harbour where at least we could go ashore, dry out and get some food. Just as we were preparing to leave an FYH workboat arrived and politely but firmly charged me £5 for a lunch stop (we were tied up 40 mins) and blamed the inability to lift the buoys on our freeboard (Beneteau 351). I calmly gave him the broken riser rope, a £5 note and we made our exit.

We won't be back.

You were lucky with £5; a lunch stop on the Yacht Station pontoon for up to three hours has gone up "slightly" (their word) from £5 to £11.

Got one of those (well, something similar). It works really well on a nice metal eye. Doesn't work on a soft, rope eye. There were some that had the eye covered in some form of hose, but the eye wasn't much better opened than the bare rope ones and they had huge friction.

That would possibly have helped with an initial grab (although I was able to grab with the boathook). However, Given that I was unable to lift the riser, and any tension on the line totally closed the rope eye, I don't see how that would have helped reeve my line. I don't think I would trust it to hold the boat in the sort of winds/tide we were experiencing...However, I have wondered whether something like that would be a good addition to the armoury...

Just hook it with a line attached to the hook (unclip the boat hook from the hook ) with a line already cleated off, jobs a goodun

It's gone down in the folklore of the East Coast Ladies the day we paid for a lunch stop..... ECF ladies weekend, we took a buoy for 30mins so that Karen could breastfeed Esme. Ferryman demanded £5. We said "we will only be 15 mins " (Karen sitting there with baby on boob). He said "still a fiver" Joy said "I know you, don't I?," "nope" says he. "Yes I do" says Joy, "your name is Robin . Robin Bastard"
Oh We laughed like drains. Still had to pay up though :) it was worth it. Funny thing was that I was actually a BH there!

It was a lousy day. I saw a yacht out there and thought who would sailing today?
You didn't miss much as the rain put the mockers on it. Crowds and atmosphere disappear quickly.
I'm on the Blackwater but a visit to Fambridge on a nice normal day is worthwhile.

That might have been me! I had a sail from Fambridge down towards Burnham and back, just before the heavy rain came.

I agree that Fambridge are very poor with Ch80. Apparently the antenna is broken, which is no excuse at all. They are usually available on the phone, but on a busy day I expect the office was not manned. Again, not really an excuse if visitors are arriving.

I believe that portable personal phones are now available, do the Fambridge management know this

Yes but that means that management need to answer the phone when it rings. I have lost count of the times I have rung and got no answer. All very well having an answering machine but that won't tell you where to go or if berths are available. I used to enjoy going to Fambridge but this year has dampened that enthusiasm.

There are two different phone numbers, one for the marina (01621-740370) and one for the Yacht Station (01621-742911). Ch80 should work for the main marina but, at busy times, it's possible the office isn't always manned.

The "Reception" hut at the Yacht Station and the associated workboat only operate at weekends in season, and then only between 0830 and 1730. I don't think the guy in the workboat carries a VHF, but I might be wrong. All the locals at the Yacht Station use the phone.

The weekend trot boat operators do carry a mobile phone , as a berth holder I’ve never had a problem get hold of them , even called in advance a couple of occasions to say we were running 10/15 mins late getting back to the mooring, always waited for us .
