Am off to Falmouth 2nd week of September for 5 days sailing and thought if any of you have useful tips, places of interest, recommended watering holes and eateries extra to those in the West Country Pilot book which might be of help to a crew of 3 girls as this area is new to me.
As this forum is the font of all knowledge I know I can rely on your assistance.

many thanks

Jane

We enjoyed mooring for a lunchtime/evening at St Mawes, and then going ashore and up to the Victory Inn - good beer and food. The castle is worth a visit too - the Endeavour was sailing into the Fal when we visited, and watching it from the battlements was a real highlight.

The St Mawes visiting buoys are green, and by the town, there's only four of them. If your unlucky, there are a host of blue ones further into the channel, all numbered. Call up St Mawes Harbour Radio on channel 12 and they'll tell you which you might be able to borrow for a stop. Very helpful and very reasonable.

It's very peaceful further up river, and there are two floating pontoons, one just below King Harry Ferry, and one further round beyond the Smugglers Cottage [didn't stop there - can't comment].

The Green Buoy two below King Harry Ferry should be flashing 3 in 15, but was only flashing 1 in 5 when we there a few weeks ago. We arrived by night so that was an entertaining puzzle.

In Falmouth itself, we dined at Da Vinci's - can't remember the street name, but I reckon you'd find it easy enough. Pizza/Pasta place, but very good.

Its a lovely cruising area, but my major piece of advice is to stay away from Falmouth Boat Construction. If I was to say what I thought of them I would probably be banned from the forum !

Well that had me going for a while - but I finally decided a four second gap between flashes was a tad on the patient side for it to be a group.

Be sure to visit Mylor Yacht Harbour. Quiet location but with good wine bar and good cafe for breakfast. Nice showers and helpful staff.

ok for the rich among us!

they charged me £36 a night for a berth and the restaurant was too pricey for us.

The Ganges restuarant is not cheap, but Castaways the wine bar does good food and is very lively. The little cafe is great for breakfast and does food all day. I'm not upto speed on visitors charges but they have moorings with taxi as well as the marina. It's a beautiful spot.

Well maybe that was the problem. According to the man in the dory, the buoy had been 'fixed' the previous week! /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Had a very pleasant meal at the Warehouse Bistro (turn right down one of the little side streets while walking into town from the Visitors' Yacht Haven) and also at 5 Degrees West, on the main street heading down towards the maritime museum.

The Maritime Museum is worth a visit.

The local Visitors Yacht Haven is a little basic, but friendly and convenient for the town. There is also a good chandlers and very good chart agent in Falmouth, apart from that Falmouth itself is a bit scruffy.

It's well worth going up stream to Truro. If your boat can get in Truro is well worth a visit.

i was quoted £18 per night when i arrived. i lay alongside the breakwater so took up the same space as a mono of the same size. when i came to leave after 5 days they doubled my bill!

i'm prepared to accept that if i lie between finger pontoons and take up two berths i should pay for them but that attitude leaves a nasty taste. i won't be back.

Forget the marinas and pontoons. Lovely empty anchorages up-river. Helford just around the corner is picturesque and villagy with good pubs .

Hi Jane

I live and sail in the Falmouth area and am sure you will really enjoy your cruising here. I have not seen the contents of the pilot book that you mention but would suggest that you might enjoy a trip up the Helford river and a banoffee pie in The Shipwrights. Port Navas yacht club is also quite fun.

In the other direction Fowey is also well worth a stop over. It is a charming little town with a livley atmoshere, good hostelries and services for yachtsmen and women.

In Falmouth itself there is the National Maritime Museum which is worth a look and there is an inexpensive restaurant called 'Steppes' where you select food in a bowl and watch it being stirfried in front of you. Sailing folk hang out in The Chain Locker or The Marina Bar. You can anchor in the harbour to port of the Yacht Haven. Last time I went onto the yacht haven it cost £17 for my Sadler 32 if that is a guide for you.

Further up the river you can anchor off Trellisick and walk through the parkland up to the National Trust run gardens. There are some lovely quiet anchorages at Tregothnan Reach and at the mouth of The Ruan river. You can also go to Truro on a high tide , or just go as far as Malpas, stop at The Heron for a drink and walk into town ( a couple of miles).

If you get stuck while you are down my mobile number is 07773366905 - I may not be able to help but will probably know someone who can.

Enjoy!

Forgot to mention The Pandora, at Restonguet Creek, which has a pontoon and showers and is in a beautiful spot!

Agree totally - would have refused to pay since they gave a quote.

Next boat I have will have no name painted on it !
