Falmouth - worth taking 3.2 Honwave for a few days?

I'm staying in Falmouth for a few days and wonder if it is worth packing my little Honwave with 5hp Honda.

Is there much to see/do there for a small tender - riverside pubs etc?

Will have to persuade SWMBO to economise on luggage as it will take most of the boot space!

Any specific hazards to take account of as well please?

I think that you can have some great adventures but I’d really stop short of crossing Carrick Roads or even venturing out past the harbour in a 3m tender; that being said:
Launch from the slipway next to Falmouth marina, ( where the float and ride is) and you have a lovely trip out towards the town, pull up in either the town marina or stand off for a short while on the sailing club pontoon and pop and get some fish and chips at Harvour Lights.

Launch from Mylor and take the boat around to the Pandora Inn, you need to be about +/- 2 hours high tide - that’s great fun and you can pull up on their pontoon and enjoy an lovely crab salad :) - want more adventure then if the tide allows, take the boat on further towards Devoran, but watch the tide.

Take the boat over to the Smugglers Inn, (shut but river bailiff present, you can park there but might have to stealth launch ;) - then either go to the beach off Trelissick Gardens or for a lovely trip down toward Malpas and even up to Truro City Center, (watch the tide!!). There’s a great pub in Mylor called the Heron or like I say go on further to Malpas Park and pop into the Trennack Mill.

There’s more....

Drive over to St Mawes throw the dingy and a hand out at the slipway and go park the car. From here you can just bimble around the bay - it’s lovely.

Take the boat to Helford Passage and enjoy a whole day on the river, the Yacht club is nice, the pubs either side are touristy but very good.

You also have Gillan Creek, a super little run with medium to high water, but not much to do there other than get an ice cream at the launching spot in St Antony.

So yes, let the wife know that she will have to leave her vanity case behind, take the roll up and enjoy the water, but really don’t go out to or around any headlands cos it might end in tears...

Yes indeed, though I think the other side of the Roads would be better. Still, if you launch at the boat park next to the maritime museum, I think you could go up towards Penryn for a short distance and then cross towards Mylor if you are concerned. Then you have plenty to do..If the weather is good the there is a small beach just inside the lighthouse..usually a few boats there so will be obvious. There is a small pontoon inside St Mawes harbour if the tide is in, or if out, just pull up onto the beach.
Creeks and rivers...
Mylor has a very good slip and car park next to it and would put you in safer water if it's is looking a bit too wild to cross from Falmouth.
One on my favourite areas to boat..even a small one !

Wow, what an amazing reply from Nigel (I edited it out due to the length of it), it takes me back to my youth and sailing a Mirror Dinghy from Maenporth beach - I felt I was almost there again whilst reading it

If it does not fit there are several places to hire small boats. I recently hired a Picarooner (16ft gaff rig open boat with a 10hp outboard) from Mylor Boat Hire based at Mylor Marina. They also had ones without the sailing rig.

There's not much luggage space left! 4 adults plus luggage plus outboard, boat,fuel tank oars, lifejackets, flares and inflator won't fit....

Thanks for the hire boat suggestion, probably a good alternative.

Roofrack/roofbox? It will probably cost about the same as boat hire for a decent one, but you will have it for future use after this trip
 
Yes that's an idea thank you.

I have the correct trailer for the boat but storing it in a busy tourist place in summer will be a nightmare. If I can get the folded boat on the roof then the rest (plus luggage) will certainly fit. Just need to check max roof loading vs weight of Honwave.

I have 2 tall sons who can assist lifting it onto the roof!
 
I live just above Loe Beach between Truro and Falmouth.

It's a great place to launch from, you can then putter up river to the Heron at Malpas, exploring as you go, perhaps going all the way to Truro. Make sure you stop off at the Trelissick pontoon amd walk up to the NT restaurant for a slab of cake from the nice ladies.

Or cut across to Turnaware bar then along the coastline to St Just and then St Mawes. This avoids doing an exposed crossing of the Carrick Roads in a small tender.

Or head to Mylor (good cafe, and excellent restaurant Castaways) then nip into the Pandora on the way back for a sharpener.

The best bit - if you have a trailer you can always find space at the back of the car park amidst the tenders (just ask Mark who takes the car park money), and you can always leave your tender there for the holiday.

This is all great info and very timely as we are heading down to Falmouth to stay in Mylor on a boat in the marina in early September.

We can't use the mothership as it's an AirBnB job so I plan to take our Lodestar 320 3D-V airdeck and our new [to us] Tohatsu 9.8 2 stroke - thanks CLB of this parish, excellent purchase.

Just hope the weather is good for a few dinghy safaris'
