Falmouth to Portimao - we made it!!!

We can see the boat now, we're at the channel end of H. Gotta say Jack - your Douro charter has started a bit of a love affair for us. I left my heart in Porto but will be back next year to spend more time on the river...I name dropped in the Feel Douro Office - they all love you and send their best wishes :)

Good spot!

Porto is a stunning city and that charter is one of a kind. We didn't even get to experience the best of it due to the locks being shut in the heavy rain. One for us to revisit, for sure.

Well done Nigel and Ann. Only sorry we didn't quite make it with you but for fun and real friendship it has been the best cruise in company we have ever done. And after thirty plus years that is saying a lot. Thanks for everything.

A winter in Porto shouldn't prove too much of a pain and we are ideally placed for the real Douro cruise next Spring. That should be enough for a trip report in its own right.

I will try to add our stats soon. It will be interesting to compare the two different style boats over a more or less identical cruise.

Enjoy Sueste - it is good but don't miss Farragood. Leave Rei das Praias (Caneiros Beach) until we get there next year!

That means the world to us Richard, we have an OS shaped hole in heart and we'll see you at the first lock next April.

Well done indeed Nigel! Look forward to the full report and pics

Ages ago I said I would post our stats for our cruise in company. Ours, though starts from Chichester and finishes in Porto. Here goes:

Grand Trip Days: 155
Grand Trip NM: 1568
Sea Hours: 214
Fuel Used: 5696 litres 1253 Imp Gallons
Fuel Cost: £4723
Av Price: £0.83 per litre
Av Consumption: 3.63 lpm or 1.25 mpg
Ports Visited: 36
Marina Fees: £4401
Av Cost per night: £28.39 (Nigel - £33.24 per night)
Av Speed: 7.33 kts (Nigel - 9.95 kts)

It is worth noting that our average fuel costs per litre are skewed by the low cost fuel we were able to buy in Guernsey and Jersey. It is perhaps a little surprising that our marina costs per night are lower than Nigel's, particularly as we are a full metre and a half longer! I think they are also a bit skewed by a monthly rate in Jersey where we were awaiting replacement batteries and by one marina (which shall be nameless) undercharging us despite my trying quite hard to persuade them of their error!

It is interesting to note that two quite different boats have recorded very similar average speeds and consumption figures over a long term cruise in company. And we were in company most of the way from Roscoff to Porto. Nigel generally only broke free from the "mother ship" if conditions were against planing speeds or very occasionally if 8 kts or so became too boring!

Look forward to seeing you in Porto in the Spring!

Only just seen this - thanks for bringing back to top. Congratulations to both crews on a great trip. The data is interesting - different boats but similar fuel results in displacement mode. Please post more pictures when you get time
