I am considering wintering in Falmouth this year en route to the sun. Have any of you stayed there, and if so, any ideas of suitability for a 6-month stay? It seems v cheap at £6 a day for our L36.

i stayed a while ago and it's fine. It's the one at the western side of falmouth harbour

Standard for new arrivals i understand is to arrive or leave too wide and run aground - run westwards towards final appraoch of marina as close to the ends of the pontoons as possible.

It's a bit out of town as i recall so bikes and dinghy are useful.

Glad to hear that you are still on target! We berthed at Falmouth Marina for nearly five years. Staff are excellent and Premier Marinas is an excellent marina operator. Falmouth is great, and there is plenty to do in and around Cornwall. Not a huge number of live-aboards. You really should budget for a car if you plan to stay over the winter in Falmouth Marina, IMO. It would be a bit mis. on foot.

Depending on the nature of your hull/keel(s), you might consider laying up at Truro. It'll be cheaper, there's more to keep you entertained during the long Cornish winter, and there's a big Tesco's with restaurant right next door. Next in importance, there's a chandlery right there, too. Next to the harbourmaster's office.....

You could also consider St Mawes/Percuil River, across the way and Malpas.

There are actually about a score 'nooks and crannies' that might suit you, dotted around the Fal estuary. I recommend you spend a few days exploring the options, before you part with your cash. One or more will certainly meet the need.

At Truro he'd be taking the mud on every tide. There are also serious security issues; drunks and addicts frequent the river and subway. That part of town isn't nice even in the daytime, particularly in the subway which is only 50 metres from the river. We had a problem one night with a very nasty drunk, and we'd only spent two nights there. You wouldn't want to leave a nice liveaboard-worthy boat for long enough to go to the cinema.

BTW, there is more than one marina in Falmouth. There is Falmouth Marina, the public marina (?open 12/12) and Port Pendennis - plus Mylor up the Carrick Roads. Have a look in Reeds and you will see what I mean - my comments were about Falmouth Marina, owned by Premier Marinas.

Thats quite a down hearted view of Truro. Truro hasn't got too bad a repuation locally, not compared to what Plymouth has for example, but that hasn't stopped the 1000s of people visiting Plymouth, and I expect paying substantially more to do so. You might have had a bad experience of Truro, but it is quite bold to make such comments - I would imagine that this isn't the norm - anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong though.

Pay a visit to Mylor, where I keep my boat. Not cheap but nice surroundings and good wine bar for night out. Only a dinghy hop from the Pandora, which is better in the winter than summer.

Have doubts staying in visitors marina in Falmouth, can be very rough in easterlies, the same goes for Mylor marina, Falmouth marina sheltered. Not a lot of space at Truro, and is probably a little better than Falmouth town for trouble, not a lot of probs though. You could try Malpas, well sheltered near Truro, Percuil river you need a car and you need to go via Truro or King Harry.
Do you want to keep it in the water? you could be lifted out and stored ashore, say Ponsharden were we are, our 27 footer is £19 a week, plenty of live aboards, though showers are not the best. Could try ashore at Mylor, Islington wharf, Challenger marine, Rustler park and ride car park, not sure of wc's and shower or live aboard, Bermie's yard in Flushing FBC, not sure again on wc's.

The inside of the visitors marina is fine in any weather. The only trouble you'll have is with me. If you say I cant moor alongside. Having said that, I'm sick of livaboards there all winter. Hogging the space and using up all the leccy sockets. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I agree with halcyon about the conditions around the town quay marina...we were anchored in Falmouth last June/July for three or four weeks and many were the times I was far happier to be at anchor off the docks rather than on the marina. And on many occasions I was glad to take refuge up the Truro river. Then there is the noise from the docks - the ships run their gennies 24/7...

Thanks for that Philip - I'll take a look. I have booked a slot at Falmouth anyway just to make sure I have somewhere to go, and it seems incredibly cheap at £6 a day for our boat.(Winter only)

I have visited Falmouth from the land side and it looks really good. However I have visited Falmouth many times and in my opinion it is one of the best places in the UK.

Have a close look and go for it!!!

The marina was not built in it's present form in 93.

Did the one that sunk last year sink because of the storm, or regardless of it. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Hang on. I sunk last year in the marina, only a bit though, maybe it was me!!
