Falmouth Anchorages

A sad development, rates for anchoring have been on the Harbourmaster's site for many years but I had never heard of anyone being stung for it.

At quieter times it would not be worth turning out the rib, the "harbour" stretches out a far as Carricknath point

Turnaware, beware of the bar. Can dinghy up and visit Trelissick.

There are so many. To keep it short this is my favourite:

Just off the mouth of Cowlands Creek, across the river from Tolverne Cottage (Smugglers). At night it is often black and silent, you could sit out a hurricane there anchored in thick gloopy mud.

Lovely anchorage hampered by bi ships chains and anchors on the bottom

We used the Yacht Haven for about ten days waiting for a weather window to cross Biscay in late July. Wasn't too expensive but it was ten years ago..... That's assuming you want to cross Biscay - ie do as we did and cross directly to La Corunna. If you're aiming for the French coast then Milford Haven is a pretty good place to lurk but in my opinion it adds to much to the trip if you're heading for say Spain.

Falmouth harbour has had a huge increase in fees across the board there. Not what it used to be even five years ago. . I only stop there if I have no other option. Spoilt by high prices.

You mentioned stopping at Noss on Dart on the way down. Although Noss is indeed now part of Premier Marinas, as things currently stand I’m not sure how much room they have for visitors even from other Premier Marinas wanting to use their free nights. A call to them well in advance to discuss your plan would be a good idea., I’m sure they’ll be helpful.

It's not quite that we refuse, it's more that they don't ask since we have already paid annual harbour dues as part of our mooring or berthing contract.

How do they know you're a local boat? Is there a sticker?
Presumably you still have to pay to use one of the pontoons upriver?

There has always been a notice on the St Mawes site saying that they charge for anchoring. Under the last Harboumaster, Gary, there was no charge but the ability to do so was retained in case they lost it. Sounds as if the new Harbourmaster has introduced charging but I doubt it. I wasn’t approached last year, I am local but to Mylor which is in the Truro area. The pontoons upriver are under Truro and everyone has to pay, locals as well. Anchoring in the Truro area is free for locals but not others.

I think that probably few would get upset about paying for a mooring or pontoon but anchoring is a different matter.
Unless there is some sort of joint holding that I am unaware of, the three harbour authorities are separate and paying harbour dues for Truro, on your regular mooring, is no more relevant to anchoring in St Mawes than paying harbour dues in Southampton

I can see the fudge for locals makes practical sense but dammed annoying if someone is on anchor a quarter of a mile from any harbour, never venturing near the place, and is asked for "harbour dues".

In fact on one occasion I anchored overnight and paid at Truro, dropping down to the Falmouth town anchorage for a loaf of bread before leaving and was approached for money there as well. To cap this the bloke was not at all happy when I told him I would not pay!

I was only talking about anchoring; of course I would expect to pay if I use a pontoon up river (never have) or a mooring off the town (but even there if it's only for a few hours I'm usually told 'no charge').

How do they know? Not sure! I do have 'FALMOUTH' written on the transom, which may be a clue. When I first had my current boat I was approached and asked for an anchoring fee when off Trelisik and replied 'but I'm local', to which the man said 'ah ok, sorry I didn't recognise the accent at first' (cheeky sod;-)

Thanks,
I'll try to perfect different accents then!
When we were on a mooring in Torbay we had a sticker each year. Then when the boat was laid up at Galmpton we had a card if we used a mooring before and after launch saying that we'd already paid harbour dues as part of the onshore fees.
So, we had something to show we were local, hence my question.

But I'll keep trying to perfect local accents as it may save a few pennies!

If your mooring came under Truro harbour you got a colored disc with Carrick on to put in boat window, allowed free anchorage in Truro area. Anchoring charges have been a problem since they came in years ago.

when i anchor there i dont pay as there is no such thing as harbour dues to private craft or anchorage charges.
