Falcon 22

Morning Neale,

You are correct about the petrol version of the BMW220 and 190 units being the same as the car engine and indeed the diesel units were built by VM.

The one you highlighted earlier in the thread (Highland Dancer) looks like a nice, clean boat but a pity about the noisy drive leg which seems to have driven the price down. The one listed in ebay has been on the market for what seems ages and looks a bit battered and bruised judging from the condition of the hull. Also, the OMC engine may well put people off because of the availability of spares. I'm not sure what reserve the seller has put on this particular boat but the asking price was around the £12k mark.

The BMW 220 engine is in fact 3.3 litre producing 190Hp and isn't a bad match for a Falcon 22. I know of many that are regularly used at sea and 5.7 litre units are not uncommon on those boats.

Having said that, my Falcon will cruise at 22kts and the best I've had out of her is 32kts so I'm happy with the engine set up. The builder claims she did in excess of 32 in her trials and I've no reason to disbelieve him.

Thanks for you valued information. I am looking at the boat at the weekend as it being sold by a friend. Just fitted a stainless steel manifold as cast one was cracked. He has had it for 2 years and spent £2k and he is selling it to me for £10k
Definatly BMW petrol engine Falcon 22SPC but he dosnt know how old it is. Engine has only done approx 500 hrs as boat was never used
Was concerned about the engine but by the comments it has put my mind at rest
I know he keeps it in good condition so thats why I asked the forum if it was a decent buy!
It is lying at Tarbet but I would bring it over to the clyde
Thanks John

Welcome to the Mad House Big John. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As we have discussed you should get a survey. If any of the Scots formites re-read this perhaps they will advise a good Surveyor in the area.

Good luck

Doug

Just a thought on aging th boat....ther should be a plate or similar somewhere with series of numbers which may inform the year.

Welcome Big john /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good idea Doug,

the boat is proberbly 85-87 give or take a year or two.
At that age the serial number should start with the year and be stamped into the gel ????

Morning Big John,

If you are looking for a Scottish based surveyor, log in to www.fairlineholidayclub.co.uk and join the site.

There are some Scots based members there that will give you all the local info you need. Not only that, once you have joined, there are page loads of information, manuals etc which include the BMW engine range...free as well!

HIN may be stamped into the transom....so they say but I never found 001 on ours
