Fake Teak!

Pictures 7 & 8 in the tek dek gallery are of my old boat. I fitted the stuff. I wouldn't say it's easy to lay but I guess when compared to cutting up bits of teak it probably is.

It weighs at least as much as proper wood, looks good but not as good as the real deal. Much cheaper than the real stuff though. I laid it about 4 years ago when each "plank" was laid and glued individually but I think now you can get it 4 planks wide so much easier to lay on the bigger areas.

Re: teak devaluing the boat

ah that's not what hlb said. He said HE wouldn't fit anything cos it might devalue the boat. Presuambly cos H wd be likely tempted to get the job done in double quick time and knock in a couple of dozen nails to make sure it stuck down.

Anyway, i think you should get some nice carpet. The teak will be cold and is ONLY becauise you have had a weekend free of hail and thunder that you are getting these mediterranean-ean(?) delusions.

Re: teak devaluing the boat

But I usually buy nails much to long, then have to bend them over and bash them down.

Anyway carpet feels much better under my socks and you dont skate about so much on it!

Just thinking of the dog sliding from end to end of boat. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: teak hot underfoot

I think tek dek is an excellent product and is gaining in popularity on new and old boats. tek dek do a new "professional" range that actually has teak strands in it. They market it as being better than teak as it remains looking like new with minimal maintenance.

Tek dek is great on the swim platform, cause for some reason the deck gets less slippery when wet. However, it wont be quite so comfortable to sit on!

Re: Opposing thumb

I have used it and its OK You do need a bit of care in laying it but its no where near as hard s trying to do it with real teak.
Another company is 'Flexy Teak' similar product but a bit cheaper.

Moored along side a guy with teak veneer over the weekend and he wasnt a happy chap . I had a price today from the first of many timber yards for 130mm x 25mm nominal size solid teak . They came in at £19.00 plus vat . Thats per lm .
Cheapest way if you want solid is to get a local joiner to mill up a hunk o tree for you .

Done one with Iroko - looks the part and much cheaper than teak - have sent you a PM

Fantastic, Great Pics and explanations.

Looks a great job, but not easy, How long did it take you?

Interesting that you fitted over the engine/fuel tank hinges, were you advised to do that??

Thanks again.

Alistair.

Bout three weekends, in all. Went over the hinges because I couldn't be arsed doing all the fiddly little bits to go round them. Which was a bit stupid in hindsight, as getting the lids off in future would be trickier (you can always remove the screws from th eother half of the hinges, of course.

Incidentally, if you're planning to start this time of year, do the bathing platform first, cos if it pisses it down later on (which it will), at least you'll be working under cover of the canopy.
