There is an interview in the FT today with CEO Derek Carter, under the heading Entrepreneurship.
Not alot it in, but I enjoy re-reading the quote about those sideways metrics again.
So, high hopes for LIBS apparently.Oh, and if you own a Fairline you are probably "established money". No hot money property tycoons, thank you very much, apparently.

I think its a euphemism for " we suddenly realised we were heading for the poopsie-crapsie, big time"
But unfortunately any bus.man. schools I ve been to have been in the UK and not USA, so I m not really able to comment ;)

Its for the benefit of their backers 3i who are into this stuff. Mind you it is a miracle that 3i are still in at Fairline. Another quote from the FT piece-

"This is a survivor brand and is less likely to be caught up by the drying up of frivolous spending," says Tim Harrison, a former 3i partner, who worked on the Fairline buy-out."

Sounds more like 'I don't work for them any more as this was a bummer deal. I am helping the current management under difficult conditions'. Pure guess of course ;-)

Bubbles like luxury boating are hit hardest IMHO by precisely their stated target customers. Yes it is a steady business but people with money to spend are just that bit wiser with trading up every year these days.

Mr Carter and his metrics again. Anyone who uses business jargon to hide unpalatable facts ought to be shot IMHO. It's so noughties. It actually sounds like he's congratulating himself on making a loss of £26m on a turnover of only £92m. It doesn't sound very much like he spotted his metrics going sideways well in advance, it sounds more like his metrics bit him in the arse before he saw them coming

Not meant as a defense, but surely he's not the only one in this industry....
That said, I fully agree with you on the nasty habit of using business jargon as if that alone could change the reality. Then again, he's in good company also in this respect!

No, true, though given build times and forward looking markets, I do wonder why they werent looking beyond yesterdays numbers.
Anyway, I ll be dusting off my stalking jacket and have a copy of Manor House Monthly with me to ensure I m immediately welcomed at their stand.No rope-barrier for me, eh !
EDIT: I m rethinking that approach. It might be best to appear neither as "established money" or "hot money", and stick with "no money"?

Past the stand today and there is a large sign saying everyone is welcome please come on the stand to book an appointment, the stand is the same (without barriers) but in this climate everyones stand is the same or smaller.

So they are encouraging folk on board.

So who is coming tomorrow...I will be honest the commute (from Twick on a fast train) has been hell that has been moved to a heller hell... and I aint looking forward to tomorrows commute

Tbh the boat show is pretty low on my list when it took me 20 minutes to get the truck the 1/4 mile from the house to the main road today. If the weather sorts itself out then we'll prolly be along next week at some point - but the temperature forecast suggests that the ice could be with us for a few days yet.

I do not agree - the stand has barriers to the boats.

You can get to the desk barrier free then its the similar routine, get through the gates and get to look at the craft on display - if you dare too.

I was there very early yesterday and I saw what I wanted and spoke to some nice poeple too - nothing wrong at all with the factory people and the dealers etc.


This make an appointment stuff drives me nuts - Oyster always do this and yesterday I pitched up at the appointed hour and there was a bloody queue forchristsake so I rolled back latter and just walked on board both the 46 and 575 - then enjoyed a glass of their nicly chilled Champoo

I walked on the Fairline stand yesterday and, yes there was a sort of a barrier. I asked whether I could look at the P48 and was told to go ahead. The difference this year is that you don't have to wait for 'your' dealer to chaperone you around any boats you want to look at which is an improvement. I'd like to think that the power of the forum had something to do with this
 
Anyone got any idea what price the new Targa 44 open ended up at. Thought about buying one before we went for the Absolute, but couldn't get a straight answer out of anyone cos they were too busy pushing hard tops, so ended up with the Abs instead. Very very glad I did too, its an apparently faultless, & very well prepared boat. Hat off to Trevor & good luck with the new range.
