How do you get this panel off? I undid the three fittings, but it still seems rock solid. I have no idea what this panel covers - any clues?

Is that on the foredeck by the sunpad or somewhere else?

Yes, that's it, there's two - one on each side of the sunpad. The recess you can see in the photo is for the sunpad, and the line at the top of the image is the base of the windscreen (sorry about the cr4p photo, it's all I have here).

Cant help on how to get them off, but I wonder if they are for windscreen wiper motor access?

Since that reccess is very definitly moulded and you have removed all the bolts I wonder if there is a 4th (or 5th) from the long side accessed from beneath. Though that would be a bit thick, why not just make them all neat and underneath if you are sticking two down there.

If it is the wiper motor ( if!) the motor on the Stbd side can be accessed by sliding the panel off above the hob in the galley in the corner. ( I think it literally just slides away).

If the motor is in the right place for this panel then it might give you an idea how to remove it / see if it is attached from below.

I would punt on mastic myself.

Why do you want to take it off?

Alternative is to call Boats.co.uk - Nick will probably know.

Thanks Jeremy. I want to take it off so I can mount something to it (and I need to get to the back of the panel to do this). In fact now I think about it I've seen the stbd wiper motor when I last had the ceiling down over the galley. I think maybe I just need to pull the ceiling down again, and then figure out what's happening.

There may be more photos tomorrow! (how thrilling...)

Hi Jimmy,
You're right about the wiper motor being above the galley, this panel also houses the extractor fan on the starboard side panel in question. I had to replace a wiper motor after accidentally turning it on while snow bound. :o The extractor motor from ECS was too noisy so I changed it for a silent12V computer fan.

I never had the need to remove these panels but I was aware that they are dirt traps that need flushing under pressure when washing down the decks. I would imagine tho, if you've removed the top circular nuts, only sikaflex is left holding it in place, but I would ask Nick too before getting brutal...

They were as much of a mystery as the floor in the cockpit having a seam that looked like a hatch that could be removed but couldn't! :o

Hope the fit is coming on nicely.

BTW. There's another T40 (same year and model (nice one)) at Shamrock Quay called, 'Visage' that has just been retrimmed in cockpit and deck cusions - Absolutely excellent job in silver beige and blue. The Targa logos' have also been stitched in to the Cockpit long seat behind the table and also the helm seat. Nice little touch was a fabric slip over cover to protect the helm seat from splashes when the BBQ is in use.

I could post some pics if you're interested.

Roger.

Thanks Roger. Upholstery pics would be v interesting - can you stick them on the refit thread please?

Ref these deck panels, I pulled the ceiling down in the saloon today and as suspected, they are basically false panels; the stbd panel exists to provide a waterproof exit for the galley extractor; the port panel is a dummy to match the stbd. However, I'm not certain I can non-destructively break the sikaflex seal that's holding these panels down. I might need to have a rethink.

They sell silicone remover in B and Q. Lord only knows what it might do to Gelcoat ( or if it works on Sikaflex) but you could spot test a bit an smother it all over!

What are you trying to fix to it?

For sure it will be polyu not silicone. And you don't have access to inject glue dissolver. Is the internal access (floor space) clear enough to bust them out with a trolley jack and 2 metres of 2x2? If not You need to rig a puller Jimmy. Hook made from 25x2 steel strip, poked down gap. Hook then craned up by a piece of m12 studding passing thru the crossbar of a goalpost made from some 4x2 standing on support blocks. Tighten m12 nut to pull the hook up. Ratchet strap might also work

Now, that is a JFM reply, too much time spent with Jeremy Clarkson me thinks. ;) Long Live JC.

Jimmy, I'll get some upholstery pics this week and post them on the refit thread as suggested. (assuming Richard has no objections) Best I've seen and good value too.

I would leave those panels in place if you can, or Sticky Paul will be making you some new ones (pod shaped) and you may even create a leak in the roof.

Yep, that's my conclusion as well. They are complicated to replicate as well. To make it even harder, directly underneath the stbd panel is the top of the shower, so you can't even get to the underside of the panel without big surgery.

Hi Jimmy,

As the other side houses the extractor fan. The side in the photo might be glued on. I thought it was there purely for cosmetic reasons.
Started to read your challenge with interest as there are not many bits on the Targa I haven't seen the last 5 years. Temped to try and take mine to bits now :)
Wish I could have returned the favor as if I remember correctly you solved the riddle of how to route the heater hose to the dinette when I got the boat.

Good luck!

Rob

Hello knowledgable T40 folk. As a newcomer with an '02 T40 I have noticed the kitchen fan is broken. I wonder if one of you or specifically RR has advice on how to access fan motor? Help would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Simon

Hi Bluetooth,

Just uncrew the vent in the cabin and the motor is attached to it if I remember correctly. I purchase a replacement unit but this has died on me after less than 5 year so this time I think I will stick a 12V fan in it. I purchased the replacement of some online UK shop. Can't really remember where unfortunately.

Rob

Thanks Rob, will work on this and report back any difficulties. I came across this thread and thought it may have been more tricky but think this was to do with earlier suggestions of JtB taking the GRP section off next to bow sunpad. Cheers, Simon
