I have not long owned a Fairline Targa 37 1999,with twin kad 44's, I'm a little disappointed with the top end speed / max RPM which is approx 3000rpm giving a top speed approx 22 / 24 knots, I had read articles stating top end speeds in excess of 30 knots. Apart from lack of RPM both engines seem to run normally with both engines maxing out at a little over 3000RPM
Any advise would be much appreciated..

You should see At least 30 knots and 3800 rpm , I'd be checking your prop sizes first then asking is all in order engine wise, service up to date? A sea trial with someone like myself may determine a clean bill of health or not . Where are you based?

My T37 with KAD44's would do 36kts on a clean hull. As others have said, I think your problem will be fouling on the hull and sterngear. Start with a lift and scrub and go from there.

Cheers

Thanks for info Paul, serviced and Anti fouled last winter before going back in the water in January this year, how can I determine if the prop size is correct ? Unfortunately the boat is moored in Portugal..

It would be a bit of a surprise if the prop size was wrong. Can you get someone local to the boat (your guardiennage person perhaps) to take a photo of the outdrives for you, that'll tell you v quickly what's going on.

Cheers
Jimmy

Is 8 months a long enough time for growth to be a problem ??

Yes.Especially in warm water and lack of use.The boat needs to move to expose a new layer of A/F and prevent growth. In addition have you been putting "stuff" on the boat,it will slow you down a bit as well.

As others have said the a small amount of growth on the props makes a big difference.

I would say it will be the turbos worn out. But check everything else first as they are abit pricey.

Do the superchargers cycle on and off?

Think those turbos either work or they dont ?

No, turbo's can work less effectively if there's a problem with them. I've just rebuilt one on my KAD44 after something small but solid had gone through it damaging the blades. Made a big difference to the power but the other turbo's also displaying same issues so that's being looked at shortly.

Costs is not too horrendous £675.00 for a rebuild from memory.

Regarding the OP's problem almost certainly a dirty bum as after 8 months in the water that could easily account for the poor performance.

I have a Turbo 36 with same problem and I suspect its barnacles built up on the props. Just had a 100 mile round trip to Brighton, and She struggled to get above 16 knots, with a clean bum WOT speed with medium load of around 22 knots. Indeed I reckon the excess fuel I used would have easily paid for the lift and scrub.

Better on the return as I decided to pootle along at displacement speed of around 8 knots, and used 1/2 the qty fuel burnt getting down to Brighton.

So an anti barnacle cream (that actually works!) and an automatic pot marker spotter are on my Christmas list.
