Fairline Targa 34

...and have a look at the Targa 37 as well, slightly older production run (ended I think in 2000 or 2001) but much better accommodation. I started looking for a 34 and ended up buying a 37.

There are a lot of differences, between the two, and in my opinion the Mk I is the better, as it is more like the layout of the Targa 37

Starting from the front working backwards:

The bed in the fore cabin in the MkII is not really a double, and is on the piss. On the Mk I, if you use the infill you’ve got a really good sized double.

On the MKII they have increased the size of the fore cabin to allow for the walk way either side of the bed by putting in a curved panel, which eats into the saloon area, therefore making the saloon smaller, and it feels a lot smaller.

The settee on the Mk II is also smaller, and a lot shallower. The settee on the Mk I encloses a drinks cabinet, which is not to be found anywhere on the Mk II - Most important.

In the heads on the Mk I there is a proper shower cubicle with sliding glass door, which is missing totally from the Mk II. The water from the sink in the Mk I drains overboard, whereas on the Mk II it runs into the shower sump, so at night, you not only get the water pump come on and wake everyone, but also the shower pump.

The galley area on the Mk II has a lump, which protrudes from the floor, which is very irritating, and not there on the MK I as the galley is in a totally different place.

The aft cabin door on the MK II opens into the already smaller saloon, whereas on the Mk I the door opens into the cabin.

On the Mk II, there is a lump on the aft cabin wall / ceiling which protrudes and is good for bashing your head on, which isn’t there in the Mk I, although the aft cabin on the Mk II does feel a bit more spacious, although beds in both models are about 6’8” long.

The helm and instrument layout on the MK I is sexier and less cluttered than the MkII, although the seating layout / arrangement is identical on both.

The engine room appears more spacious on the Mk I and the engines & ancillaries are more accessible, and doesn’t have that stupid table storage compartment in there, as does the MK II.

There are probably other differences but these are a few which come to mind, while having a bad day at work. The only two disadvantages I can think of with the MK I over the MK II, is that 1) they are older & 2) weren’t available with the KAD 300s.

A friend of mine has a new MKII and much prefers the layout in my MKI, and as I’ve said previously, and as witnessed by KevB, the Mk I doesn’t fall apart like the MKII did on a rough crossing to C I s recently.

Hope that is of interest

Thats really useful infomation about the MK1 and MK11. I am also looking the Targa 34 which all round seems a pretty good boat. I am amazed how much they hold their price though, it is difficult to get a really good deal on a secondhand one, and the good nick ones seemed to get snapped up pretty quickly. The Targa 40 was also a cracking boat, but there is a big difference in price, even on 4 and 5 year old models.

Peters have some good deals on new models, and I have only found a small number on the market at present.

Yep, T34's have held their value very well. As others have said also take a look at T37, it's a slightly older design but you get a bit more space for not much more dosh.

If you looking for a T34 then perhaps you could place a Wanted ad on my web site?

It appears the T37s for sale today, are at a higher price than a few years ago. Was looking through an old MBY recently, which confirmed this. I know one guy who had a T37 (which I believe is now owned by a certain forumite) who "only" got a £100k for it about 5 years ago, but it was a little tatty. However, T37s seem to take an age to sell, whereas the 34s go more quickly. One friend took a year to sell his 37, and it was a fine example. Another friend is trying to sell his, and has been on the market for well over a year. Don't really understand why, as it is one of Fairline's classics.

Not sure when they stopped production. Must have been quite early on.

Easiest way to tell which is which, is by looking at the instruments at the helm. If rev counters etc are laid out in a long row behind the windscreen, as on Targa 37 it's a Mk I. If rev counters etc are all huddled up around the steering wheel, it's a MkII.

I did same as Jimmy the builder and after looking for a 34 for 6 months looked at a 37 and changed my mind!

I did feel the boat (37) was a better boat with the extra space and just little things like extra shower compartment but I also just felt that the T34's we're all overpriced in comparison? I guess driven by current new prices shooting up.

BTW - I'm not slagging off 34's - both good boats!

I know someone with a mk1, hes really pleased with it. I think he may be selling to go bigger, I can put you in touch if you like. Theres a lot on the market at the mo, reckon you can get a nice one for 105k. Even with base kad42's they do 34 knots. best of luck
