I'm in the process of purchasing a targa 34 1999. There is a smell of diesel in the aft cabin coming from under rear berth. There looks like a water tank under this. I am assuming it cannot be fuel tank ?! It is a long plastic tank.

Definitely water tank under the rear berth. Fuel tank sits between rear cabin and engine bay.

The tank is accessed via its own hatch, which sits directly in front of the engine hatch. You need to remove the starboard seat assembly to open this hatch. Take off the seat cushion and you will see some stainless clips. Undo these.

There is also an inspection cover under this seat, but this really only gives access to the fuel cocks etc.

I have a targa 33 and I think the design is basically the same. The fuel tank is under the floor in the rear cockpit just in front of the engine hatch. The water tank sits under this I think.

On mine there isnt anything under the rear berth apart from the heads in and out sea cocks and the fresh water pump.

I have a bit of dirty water in my bilge and this does not run under the rear cabin berths ever.

But this might not be the case if the design changed a lot.

Thanks. Will take a look

The fuel tank is under the floor section in line with the single "captains" seat. Just in front of the engine bay hatch and behind the aft cabin where floor drops to give the step. See picture from my old T34. As per comment above inside the seat gives access to fuel tank. Can confirm the rear most bed in aft cabin sits on water tank whilst the front bed is for optional holding tank or otherwise good storage area.
Cant think why it would smell of diesel but sure surveyor could shed light on this or even honest vendor/broker!

Thanks for that very concise answer. My main worry was that they'd placed (with what would have been crazy design) fuel tank under rear berth. It looked like a water tank only smells like fuel tank !!
