I have a mate having a test ride in a Targa 29 (twin 150hp diesels) on Sunday, it will be his first boat and he's asked me to go along with him. Anything in particular we should look for, and anyone had any experience of these boats?

Barry,
IMHO the "29" is a good boat.........I looked at a few before buying a "31". The downside to what your mate is interested in are the "150 donkeys". Most people seem to look for the "170" and this could be an issue when re-selling. As always though there is obviously the cost implication......i.e. bigger engine .....typically higher asking price..........always a trade off when buying boats.
What year is the boat???

All early diesel T29's had AD31's. Later there was a choice between those and KAD32's. It will be very rare for a later boat to be fitted with AD31's. Although only 20hp difference the KAD32 has masses more torque and will jump on to the plane. As NoIllusion says, this should be reflected in the price.

Barry, sorry I didn't find this in time...

As has been said, there are probably only two things about the T29 to look at - engines and colour. The 150's (AD31s) plane fine, and give a top end of dead on 30 knots on the GPS, but the boat can be sensitive to loading - six adults on board, and you need to make sure they're not all sat at the stern, or she won't get over the hump. The KAD32s give a top of nearer 37 knots, I believe, due to longer props and different gearing in the legs. Common complaint of all supercharged Volvos (I'm told) is the whine.

Blue hull is the most desirable, white next, and don't touch the aqua/jade ones.

Check under the floor panels in the aft cabin for damp - a leaking porthole (probably just needs the screws adjusting) in the galley will put water under the bed, and in the stowage at the starboard end.
