I am going to quote for a varnish job on a Fairline Squadron
and need to know what varnish was put on as new.
Fairline don't seem to want to answer my email
albeıtI sent it to sales and asked them to forward it to tech services.
Anybody got any useful contacts for Fairline who might help?
Thanks,
Chris
P.S. Sorry for repeat post but first title was probably too obscure.

B*gger! I got all excited for a minute thinking that I might ask you if you could do a varnishing project which is just a bit too much for me to contemplate on my own but really not massive and then I checked your profile and saw that you are not terribly local to me! Good luck with the Squaddie varnish. If Essex can't help I'd bet jfm of this parish could tell you what spec the squaddie varnish is.

I don't know the manufacturer or spec of the actual products they use though i could ask/find out as I am at the factory a lot (I was there yesterday, pity I didn't know about your request). Also, it depends which year the boat is. If it's a recent build in the high gloss finish, then it's not just varnish, it's a whole 8-ish step process using modern lacquers to get the finish.

If you're replacing some localised damage like a scratch then the high-gloss lacquer system allows for localised repairs and the re-finished patch can be blended into the rest of the panel. There is no need to re-finish the whole panel. If your job is to refinish the whole boat then it must be an old boat (?) in which case it might be using an earlier generation finish. Hence, we need to know the age of the boat. I'm surprised there are any Squadrons that need a full re-finishing, apart from the few whose lacquer bloomed (milkt white) when it was discovered that moisture can affect some of the lacquer products, but I think those few boats have been refinished by now

I must say that where I sail in France there are lots of boat refinishing firms who do this work in their sleep and are fully conversant with all the products. If you're not, then this might not be the job for you, especially if you think it's a varnishing job! :-)

Right department

Suspect you will get more response if you address your question specifically to: "Customer Support"

Try asking what LACQUER they used (not varnish) you will need the hull number for this.

This is not a job to be done without the correct spray equipment.

A fine escuse to prolong a reply is it not ...................

Merely stating a fact. There is no "tech services". But there is a "customer support".
