Good Afternoon all,

we lifted PoochPower back in late November to find the following damage to our Propellor :-

The duo props have been removed and are apparently repairable, my question is would this damage have affected performance in any way ? also we have no idea what caused such a chunk to have been torn out of the propellor.

Secondly this is the state of our sterndrive after a year in the water, what do we need to paint on it & the props to give another seasons protection ? we are moored in the river at Christchurch.

Ouch, you need a new prop, that'd prop would cause vibration.

Yes antifoul the prop and drive, fit new anodes, change oil, fit new bellows if not fitted in last two years.

If there b 5 model, I think stelican off this forum had some for sale.

It's probably due to corrosion as well.

That prop would cause a loss of performance due to cavitation, I have had worse duoprops repaired though with no problems, you probably just hit something without realising it. The anode has limescale on it which happens in hard freshwater, I have just shot blasted it off and refitted in the past, but Ali ones work well and seem to lime up less.

That would definitely lose you performance and cause vibration when running, you will notice the difference when you get new ones or these repaired, I had my badly damaged props replaced last year and felt like a new boat with new ones.
As mentioned by Volvo Paul Stelican is selling some b5 props on this site, I bought some off him as spares, had s/s fitted last year but fancied a spare set in case of problems.

I'm guessing he has a v 8 lump in it which has b5 props, well the last one I repaired did anyway.

Why has the exhaust outlet got those little flaps on?, pretty sure my sx drive doesnt have them.
Drew i looked at some of your youtube vids when looking for our sprint, so i can now officially blame you:D
Steel developments are the place for repairs about forty pounds a prop.

Interestingly, the anode looks to be in almost perfect condition, which means that it didn't do it's job very well.

Maybe consider Aluminium anodes for estuaries such as Christchurch?

http://www.volvopenta.com/volvopent.../parts_service/faq/pages/FAQ_corrosion_1.aspx

would it have made any difference to the anodes in as much as we never left the Batteries conected whenever we left her and always re-connected when we were about to go out ?? So very minimal connectivity electrical wise.
Never really understood the whole electrical sey up on her, even to the point of a domestic plug socket above some form of " finned" electrical box. ( sorry do not do electrics )

Andrew.

It's more about different metals fizzing away in the water.
Because they are in the water, they are all connected.

e.g. Stainless steel is very resistant to fizzing away, but will cause everything else nearby to go fizz first.

In the case of Aluminium props, if the anodes are missing or not working, the props will slowly fizz away, followed by the outdrive. DP-E outdrives are about £6000 to replace.

Shore power just makes the whole thing worse by adding in a few stray currents into the mix.

What you need to be happening is for the anodes, and nothing else, to be slowly fizzing to nowt.

Or he could have been attacked by Aluminium-Eating Pirahna.

It's Christchurch - most likely to have touched a stone in the mud somewhere along the way.

They could of course have been repaired before and the bits which were stuck on have fallen off.

I assume you are talking about the props having been repaired before.

If Steel developments had repaired them then there would be no part to fall off as they would completely rebuild the blade.

Most importantly, they will give good advice and not offer to repair them unless they were sure they could do them properly. If repaired properly, they will look right and be balanced too. Well worth a trip to confirm.

For my money, get them repaired (£34 approx.) for spares and go Stainless as your main props:

They are better in nearly every way, power, grip, economy, durabilty etc.

Get advice on the stainless equivalent though, Steel Developments could help there too.

Have a look here:

No, I have no connection with them but they certainly gave me good advice and service in the past.

Yes, I was at a dealer who specialised in selling both new and second hand outboards and appeared to break outboards up for scrap. I asked if they could recommend where to send my propeller to and they said that they did it. So I did not bother.
