It's about the Hull. Had Survey done. Surveyor says oh dear me. Bad news, hull deflecting around front keel chock. Says hull delaminated from internal lattice of stiffeners. I contact Fairline who say no. Fury has solid layup so no internal stiffeners. Fairline also say Yard must have chocked in wrong place (1.5 M back from bow).
Yard agrees to lift & rechock boat but does have dent on keel line. Surveyor then says ah but hull panels either side of keel still deflect when hit with hammer - must be summat wrong. It's a solid hull - good bonding to inner floor moulding.
Any ideas what's going on please? Is Surveyor talking b******s or is the front third of my boat going to detach at 30 kts?
Help please

Shame that, what age is the boat, I looked at a few a while back and the older ones seem to flex a little in the hull. If it is an older fury then maybe, like a lot of things, they tend to sag with age if its spent any amount of time on chocks. As too the deflection when hit with a Hammer. Are you sure you have the right chap looking at it! Hitting it with a hammer is IMHO not really a good test as its a localised impact and not the type of stress that would be acting on the hull in normal use, unless you hit a lot of pontoons that is.

Can you get a second opinion or take a look at the thing from inside yourself. Sounds a bit Iffy if you ask me.

Wha'dya mean "I'm always playing with this engine" its the only way to get it to run!

Are you looking to buy this boat or have you already bought it ?

If you havnt bought it yet, walk away theres plenty more fury's in the water.

If you have bought it i'm sure one of the mags (prob MBM) did a feature on fitting new/extra stringers to a fury. It was abit ago.

W've had a 1973 Fury here for 8 years and fitted two (heavier) diesels, and have had no probs as mentioned. Maybe your's is more modern than this?

I know what you mean about things sagging with age & I'm a touch concerned SWMBO may commission a survey on me. This surveyor guy is supposed to be a GRP specialist & I wonder if he's a bit fixated on the subject. I've taken the boat all over including Solent - Channel Islands without mishap & now he's got me really worried. I mean with a solid layup, surely there's nothing to come apart is there? The inner floor moulding is fine & well attached to the hull.

Get a second survey done preferably by someone familiar with powerboats. Ask the first surveyor to show you where the delamination is. Even if he's right, its probably reasonably easy to repair
Not sure what to make of Fairline's statement. I thought virtually every boat has a lattice of stringers/stiffeners bonded inside the hull. I think some boats have an additional grid between the main strigers/stiffeners and this is what Fairline could have been referring to.
Re the yard, it does irritate me when yards use tiny bits of timber to prop boats up creating almost point loading situations but there should be an indication on the hull or in the instruction manual where the safe lifting points are and if the chocks are in line with the lifting points, there should'nt be a problem. It might just be that the gelcoat is slightly depressed without any structural damage and again its easily repairable

Article was "Test of Time" Fury called Danger Mouse. MBM Feb 99.

Hull was showing signs of stress, they bonded 2 extra 9ft stiffeners into the hull to fix it. Fairline acknowledged problem are were helpfull with info.

Might give you some extra ideas.

Engines are Peugeot 2.5 turbos. About 90/100 hp. Max. speed about 24 knots. We did the conversion ourselves, which involved altering the bell housings, and making up indirect cooling system using Lancing Marine bits. and fitting front engine bearers. Original setup was 130C's/270's. Paid for itself yonks ago. Going to IOM TT ON Sunday, about 1 hour from here!
Cheers, D.
