I may be looking at a replacement boat.

2 have caught my eye.

A fairline 36 sedan with cat 3116s

A fairline phanton 41 with cat 3208s

I do more than the average number of hours, 2-300 a year so need to factor in running costs. I reckon I do 2/3 at displacemtn speeds, 1/3 planing.

anyone got real world consumption figures for these or comments on the engines?

I had 31216 CATS in my last boat, very happy with them.

Biggest issue, keep new primary fuel filters fresh and clean, my boat had 2 x Racor 500 on it, elements cheap, but if dirty fuel gets to the pump and injectors, costs can be quite high.

My boat was a 42 foot Sports Cruiser, so fuel consumption probably irrelevant.

I had a Sedan 36 which i repowered with a pair of Volvo Penta 63P 370 hp each .

A great sea boat built like a brick **** house.

25 knots about 4.8 litres per mile

22 knots about 5.2 litres per mile

I reckonhave no figures but at say 12 knots about 2.5 litres per mile.

I dont think fuel consumption for speed with cats would be much different, Latestarter may differ?

Thank you! Interesting isn't it we often forget we can save fuel by speeding up.

I was hoping to stay in MPG territory though not drift to GPM, perhaps I was expecting too much......

Based on that I think the phantom 41 may just be too juicy, lets see if anyone has figures for that too.

Good info - thank you :)

3208, very thirstry!.

3116 suffered exhaust manifold and elbow issues, soft blocks, head replacement under warranty, poor valves, quite a list, stick with the volvos mate.

Yes a lot of initial problems with this engine but a least CAT put their hands up and rectified which is not something that volvo penta do
Still dont bite the hand that feeds you!

I've had Cat 3208TAs in 3 boats now and none of them have missed a beat. Yup because they're large capacity, mechanically injected V8s, they're a bit thirsty although I wouldn't say very thirsty. In my last boat, a Ferretti 46 with 442hp 3208TAs, which is a bit of a heavy old lump, I got about 0.75nmpg @ 20kts so in a Phantom 41, which I'm guessing will have the 375hp version(?) I would expect about 0.9mpg @ 20kts. Personally, I would go for the 3208 engined boat simply because they're big torquey engines, feel unburstable and I'm a sucker for a V8.
Btw you can download all the tech data on both Cat engines from the Cat website (unlike Volvo) which will give you both max power and prop demand fuel consumption curves. Just be aware that the prop demand curve is given for a displacement hulled boat and typically, the fuel curve for a planing boat will be somewhere between the max power and prop demand curves according to my experience

No such animal as 31216......Either 3116 or 3126. Using Racor 500MA on either simply nuts, amazed Finning signed them off.
