Hi all, in my ongoing search for a bigger boat the F40 and 43 both come up as possibilities.

So, what do you think?
Have you owned or cruised one?
How did you get on?
...and should I subject myself to owning two Volvo pentas????

Don't they make them with Cats as well ? Nicer engines. Prettier colour too.

I have a 2003 Phantom 40 with Cats and now that all the 'ususal' defects associated with new boats have been resolved I can confim that the 40 is a great boat. The Cats give the bigger engine size option which gives about 31 knots. We looked at the 43 but actually preferred the lines and interior of the 40. (It also fits our mooring!).

Imho good boats, both. Excellent hulls, steering, and drivers "feel". We have had a 42 for a few years and are trading in now for bigger fairline.

One nice aspect of the phantoms in this size range is that they`re very popular 2nd hand, so our old one was very easy to sell - we actually have an auction situation right now plus the luxury of a full price trade-in underwrite against the new boat exercisale up until end Jan when new one is delivered. Dont underestimate this aspect, some boats take 6months+ to sell

imho the bad press on volvos is one sided and misleading - many of the probs are in the smaller engines. You would get TAMD63p engines in the 40, which are nice big slow revving diesels that never ever wear out or let you down. We havee these in our old 42. I cant rem fairline`s prices but unless the cummins are cheaper then you would be mad imho not to get the 63 ps. They come in white or green, btw, I think. White much nicer imho. Also depends where you keep boat, is there service nearby? We have specified volvos in our new boat. Other choices were MAN and Caterpillar, both of which are totally fine but Volvo better all round imho at the particular HP level we are at

If you are buying new in UK, PM me and I can suggest what discount off list price you might get, having been thru this hoop over last couple months

Re: Fairline 40 is Ollesinski not Bennett

Jonny I dont think that's correct. The new Phantom 40 (he is talking about the current model) is a newly-designed ollesinski hull with all mod cons like tunnelled props etc.
