Hi all,
First time here. Read many threads in the past but never posted. Sorry if it’s in the wrong place but I was unsure.

I’m looking at a T36 but then owner is unsure which engines she has. He says it could be the 225hp or the 255hp. I would prefer the TAMD60C.

Apparently there is no engine plates to state what they are. Does anyone know how I can tell the difference between the two engines?

Thank you in advance for your help.

They look identical, the ho difference might be a knot at the top end so it’s not a deal breaker , you can uprate the pump easily that’s the only difference, the revs are the same .

If your using at sea you really need the 61A engines at 306 hp the turbo is a big heavy boat .

How did he buy any service parts ,if he does not know what engine to quote , how long has he owned the boat.

thank you for the information I will bear that in mind about the pump if it does turn out to be the 225hp. Am I correct in thinking that the 255hp revs to 2800 or have I dreamt that?

If you are still looking come and buy mine. It has the much preferred TAMD61As.
Had a mate with the smaller engines and he stated that his just felt sluggish
There are a few on the market similar age to mine and same price but with the smaller engines

I would support the view that the 61A's would be a better match. Ocean Belle with the TAMD60C was always a bit under powered, with a sensible crusing speed ~ 16 knots and max ~ 21 knots. Its 5 years since I sold my Turbo 36 and prices now for the ~ 1990 boats are on a par with what I sold my 1986 boat in 2015. Paul's boat (Rocksteadee) certainly worth a look.

Thank you for the info, I have sent Rocksteadee a PM.

I used to own a 1985 Turbo 36 with the 255hp TAMD60C engines. Yes she was no ball of fire but mine topped out at 25-26kts with a clean hull and cruised all day at 18-20kts. Yes I know the TAMD61A engines are preferable but the boat will cost more. I wouldn't rule out a well sorted TAMD60C engined Turbo because of performance. Obviously the engines to avoid in a Turbo for offshore use are the TAMD41A which are definitely underpowered

Apart from that, the Turbo 36 is a fantastic boat, one of the best if not the best boat Fairline ever built

I saw on the ‘other‘ forum the tendency to over heat. I would advise to stipulate getting this fixed as a condition of sale.
I had the same problem with both engines, this did not show up in the sea trial as they only started to climb in temp after about 2 hours at top cruising speed.
Had all 6 heat exchangers stripped, ultrasonic clean and rebuilt, new impellers, new thermostat, engine flush and new antifreeze, new flexi pipe (one burst due to new impellor).
Doing all the manual work myself still cost 2.5k

I would certainly like to avoid getting into all that with the engines if one is over heating already. After speaking to the broker he states that the boat has not moved for roughly two years so I’m assuming there is a good reason for that. I’m now leaning towards leaving that one alone. The reason for my interest in that one was it was a little cheaper and within my price range but again there is almost certainly a reason for that. I think the route of selling my current boat and buying a slightly newer version of the T36 is the route I’m going to have to take.

Keep going, You are talking yourself into looking at mine

Was you going to buy the other T36 without selling yours, if so not wise . You should say what you are selling some one might be looking for one .
